Are the PCF 554 Disk Drives Compatible?

Recommended Posts

The question is in the title. Are PCF 554 drives compatible with 8-bit Atari systems? What I've read so far points to the drive being only compatible with the PC line, but I can't find a definitive answer.

Hello fadix

I googled "Atari PCF554" and found, among other things, this picture:

dsc08009.jpg

I guess that means it not compatible. Remember, the PCF554 is a PC drive which connects to a PC. The XF551 is a PC drive which connects to an Atari 8 bit computer. The latter needs hardware to translate signals from the drive to the computer and vice versa, the first doesn't.

Sincerely

Mathy

I don't have any knowledge about the PCF554 drive, but it's likely that in addition to the different interface board that it also uses a 720KB drive mechanism.

No. This was supposedly almost compatible with the ST (68000 cpu) line. You had to do a minor mod to use them. Might pose this question in the ST forum and you might get more info.

Notice the round-type drive connectors (yes, hard to see, but not nearly wide enough to be SIO connectors).
