TOKYO — Nintendo's president vowed Thursday to stick to the company’s old ways and refused to resign or cut product prices despite the video game maker’s dismal earnings.

Instead, Satoru Iwata said the company planned to enter the health care industry.

Mr. Iwata did not give details of what he called his “quality of life” business plans, except that it would not be a wearable device. Mr. Iwata promised to disclose details later this year.

 I don't know what to think of this. What's next,Sony in the automotive business?what are you guy's thoughts on this?

Sadly, this often the way for a company to survive when their core business is troubled. [Edit: Just remembered the business term for it which is diversification. It's a common strategy undertaken with a troubled company to spread their eggs around so that they're not all in one basket].

During the bad days of the 1960's and 1970's before the industry was unshackled by the government and again started to prosper, American railroads did the same thing and usually at the expense of their core business that many were starting to think didn't have a future. A lot of companies today can be traced back to then that have since been spun off once railroading again became the focus (Sprint for instance was started by the Southern Pacific Railroad to utilize their microwave communications systems and rail right of way for fiber optic telecommunication systems).

Hopefully it works out for everyone involved and doesn't come at the detriment of their traditional videogaming business.
