Controller confusion

Recommended Posts

I recently started collecting Atari games, and I am confused by the number of controllers out there.

Normal Atari joysticks have red buttons, but when I was a kid, I had a 3 party controller with a big yellow button, does anyone now anything about that or how it stands up to a stadard controller?

But the big question I have is about keypad controllers. As far as I can tell, there's atleast three different kinds of number pad controllers. There's Atari keypads, like those used in Basic Programming. There's the Star Raiders controller, ONLY used for Star Raiders. and then there Kids Controllers, used in the Seasame street games. Are any of these controllers interchangeable or usable with other games, or do I have to find all three? I've had a Big Bird's Egg Catch for years I've never been able to play and now I have a Star Raiders that I can't play either. Which keypad controller should I get, or should I get all three kinds?

That lists the type of controllers, but it doesn't say if they are interchangable or answer anything about the different kind of joystick.

Each keypad section says "functionally identical to . . ." but you might also want to look at this post on that subject:

If that's what it means, then I wonder which kind I should get. Since I'm trying to get all the "picture label" games, maybe I should get the normal atari keypads.
