I've learnt to:

Don't be afraid of bosses menacing you, at the end they will run in predefined patterns :P

Don't matter how so hard was your fight, your skin never will have bruises. Even best, if Blanka chews your head and sucks your brain, you'll recover ;)

If you're walking a corridor with windows, vicious dogs will break through windows.

Never run against a big laser cannon, it's a little hot.

Start shooting once you see anything big enough to be a boss.

If you see something really weird, just drop a missile or two for safety.

When you're driving a spaceship and you see a small corridor, go to full speed, 100% sure it will close.

If there is a zombie/monster invasion, don't worry, one guy can defeat they and people recognizing you're the "one" has leaved ammo everywhere, being too shy to use it themselves.

Don't worry about stress, real heros doesn't have shaking hands when fighting the unknown, your aim will be perfect.

Real heros doesn't need to go to bathroom.

If you see a thing with traslucent armor and a kind of Rasta hair, shoot it, it is 100% sure is an alien. Besides it will leave a cute all-powerful alien weapon that fits your hand and amazingly you'll know how to use it!

Don't worry about making too much noise killing your enemies, the other enemies will wait for you instead of surrounding you.

Check the weapon your enemy is using and go back to armory for the bigger one, yes, the one that looks like no one can carry. Doesn't matter if your enemy is using a machine gun, a big sword will scare him.

Sometimes you can't force things - you have to take a step back, give yourself some time, get some fresh air and come back to a problem later.

After multiple failed attempts at finishing Wonderboy 3 (I think that was it) on the SMS, I got frustrated... and did progressively worse with each attempt. After a while I put the controller down, took a walk around the neighborhood and then came back an hour later and beat it on my first attempt.

Specifically with respect to RPGs:

- The armor you take from the dead dwarf will fit you perfectly. So will the one taken from the dead ogre ten minutes later.

- No, you can't pick up that magic dagger you found in the dragon's horde unless you drop something else first. However, the 567,876,421 gold pieces will always fit into your backpack, no problem.

- A king will not hesitate to entrust you with the survival of his kingdom, especially if you are part of a bunch of 1st level misfits who are new in town.

It's totally possible for a solider to carry one or two full automatic guns like machine guns, spread guns, or flame throwers, have them work for hours on end without ever needing ammo or repair, for them to never jam, for him to tip them in several directions, and oh, be able to run at full tilt while doing so.

It's also totally possible for a person with no weapon training or experience to be able to use a pistol, shotgun, or rifle with no problems and no recoil. (Unless the game is one of those rare exceptions where the inability of the hero to do such thing is actually central to the plot.)
