Season 11 Round 10 - Excitebike

Recommended Posts

Welcome to the final round of the 11th season of the Atari Age NES High Score League!

This round we are going to play the classic NES launch title Excitebike!

This round ends on Monday, March 17th.

Title: Excitebike
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Released: 10/18/1985

http://youtu.be/543dG0EWcYM

Rules:

Play game mode "A". Post your time for each of the five tracks. Keep a pencil and paper handy (or grab a screenshot) because once the game moves on to the next track, I don't think you can see your time for the previous tracks anymore. I'll add your five times together and that will be your overall time/score. You don't have to do it all in one run, you can just individually load tracks at the track selection screen and work on them one at a time until you get what you think is your best time.

Scores so far:

Current standings:

1. DonPedro 159
2. asponge 110
3. S.BAZ 99
4. Lid 94
5. Jibbajaba 78
6. roadrunner 76
7. darthkur 64
8. classicgamer_27330 51
9. jblenkle 48

Post your time for each of the three tracks.

Do you mean the first three tracks? Because there are five (and the challenge track, but that doesn't count I guess).

And to clarify further, is it about times achieved in a single run? Or simply our best times achieved during those 2 weeks, irrespective whether it was in a single run or not?

I have a question --

If you get 3rd place or better it's not game over & you move on to a tougher go at the same track. I'm guessing we are to play the first run through for each Track Selection, then hit reset and select the next track? play once through on each one & add 'em up?

one thing I am noticing is that I definitely did not keep my old skills at Excitebike.

Sorry. I posted the rules for this round based on memory, as I had unhooked my NES. Obviously a bad idea. I have updated the rules in the OP.

Yeah you just do the first run-through on each track. Its up to you whether or not you want to do the second run on each track, or just reset the game and load the next track. You just need to optimize your times for each of the 5 selectable tracks, and then post all 5 of those times here.

Track 1: 1:41:47

Track 2: 1:31:69

Track 3: 1:41:60

Track 4: 1:26:19

Track 5: 1:40:09

TOTAL: 8:01:04 (I hope that's right...I'm rusty adding 1/100ths of a second into the mix).

And sorry...I'm not completely clear on the rules as far as bettering our times. If I race all five tracks again and do worse on 4 of them and better on 1 of them, do I just submit that one time? And then how is it figured into my original time? I'm guessing the old time will have to be subtracted back out and the new time added in. This could get confusing.

Wouldn't it be easier just to submit a total faster time for all 5 tracks than adding in and subtracting out times?

EDIT: You're making me think too much and it hurts!!!

One last (?) question. The way the game works, and here's the relevant part of the manual...

post-36127-0-77138400-1394145469_thumb.jpg

... is that when we choose a number 1-5 we first race on the challenge track (being the easier version of the main track we've chosen) and then the main tracks, starting from the one we've chosen. There are 5 different challenge tracks and 5 different main tracks.

So my question is: do we post our times for the challenge tracks (easier) or the main tracks (harder). I'd suggest the challenge tracks as the qualification for the main ones isn't automatic.

Track 1: 0:59:90
Track 2: 0:54:84
Track 3: 1:10:14
Track 4: 1:10:73
Track 5: 1:08:20 1:04:16

Total: 5:23:81 5:19:77

Check my math! Back w/ pics later I'm on my phone
I played the first run-through for each track
Now if I understand correctly, to improve that I'll have to play all five again, one time each, then that total is my next score.

[cool! so I have an improvement for my Track 5 score then]

You just do the first race on each track. You submit your best time for each track. You don't have to do a run-through of all 5 tracks at once. Just get the best time you can on each track, then submit the 5 times together. You can just work on optimizing your times one track at a time, if you want. The order that you do them in, and whether or not you do them in one play-through is totally up to you.

So what I'm saying is that you can turn on the game, select track 1, record your time, then (if you want) reset the game and do it again. You can keep doing that until you can't improve your time, then repeat the process with the second track. Or if you prefer, you can just play the game the whole way through and write down your time for the first run of each track. Basically one way or another you need to race on each track a multitude of times, then just post the fastest time.

Edit: If you post all of your times, and then you improve one of them during a subsequent gaming session, then please either edit your post or re-post all 5 times in a new post. Please don't make me piece together your list of times from multiple posts. If you do, I will send you a prize which will consist of a horrible NES game sprayed with Liquid Ass inside and out.
