Grading the SGM So Far

Recommended Posts

I have four games for the SGM so far:

Buck Rogers Super Game

Dragon's Lair

Rollerball

Zaxxon Super Game

I'm still waiting for that killer app for the SGM. I like the SGM games I purchased so far but none of them make my jaw drop.

My grade for the SGM: C

I think that's a fair grade until Donkey Kong Arcade is released and lives up to the hype.

Zaxxon and Dragon's Lair are indeed the cream of the crop so far with King's Valley coming in a close third. A final grade is still up in the air until that something special game is finally completed and released... kinda like peanut butter and jelly, the SGM is just missing something without DKA.

Even though the game doesn't require the SGM, only uses the extra sound chip provided by the SGM, Mecha8 is as close as we are to that killer game right now.

I myself only have Super Zaxxon, but I would like to get more, love the red LED light that comes on once you turn your Coleco.

The red light is the most useful part of the SGM for me.

The SGM's Killer APP does not require the SGM.

I have to agree!!! I would sometimes forget to turn my ColecoVision off...with the red light I can now tell if it's on or off and not leave it on for days at a time.

Gameplay wise, King's Valley was the best of the SGM launch titles.

Mecha8 was an interesting compromise, providing a added bonus with the enhanced sound. I'd like to see more games take advantage of this.

Good sh*t, eh! :P

The way I look at it, if Coleco had actually released their SGM, there probably would have only been about 6 games released for it anyway before the end of the CV & ADAM. So right now we have 6 games released that require Opcode's SGM... so everything is as it should be.

Ever since I placed my ColecoVision in the front window to show off and leave it on at night with that RED LIGHT, I've been getting a lot of late night callers. :-o I actually kinda wish the light was blue now to match Yurkie's power and pause light mods and the AtariMax SD Cart blue access light.

But then I would have to ruin the label to get to the two screws in order to open it. Thank heavensI decided to accept the label as is instead of waiting for the improved label.

I really enjoy Buck Rodgers and Super Zaxxon for my SGM so far. The graphics and sound are good, and I can certainly see what difference the SGM makes. Mecha 8 is also a really cool top down shooter.

I can certainly see what difference the SGM makes.

What you see is not due to the SGM , it is due to the megacart mainly. (just the fact to have more ROM on the Cartridge , you could do that same game without the SGM ,You would just have to rework and optimize the RAM usage to fit in the 1k of the Coleco)

For now, i really see nothing that would be not doable without the SGM with some efforts. (except enhanced sound of course).

I hope we will see one day, something that really take advantage of additional RAM in a other way than just simply simplified the developer's life. ;-)

I think the additional RAM could be used for instance for advanced real time strategy games , or economical simulation games , may for a game like "Elite" or "Populus" . I would love to see "Populus" on colecovision. It is one of my all time most favorite game!

These games could take really advantage of the SGM.

Now that you said it: Elite would be a killer app for the SGM. Also, M.U.L.E. would be splendid - maybe someone develops a 4-player joystick adapter

I dont own the SGM, but I think the module was created, in order to more easy convert more games from the MSX. Get more ram, and a MSX sound chip. Its not a "killer module".

Other retro systems, have more "killer modules" add better graphics, sound and a faster cpu, but then its just more modern hardware, and have nothing to do with the original retrosystem ?

I dont know if its possible to created a module which have a new videochip like the V9990 or so, and then FM chip, like the MSX2+ standard, or msx moonsound opl4 I guess. But again its moving to a new level, maybe to far away from the original, and if people wanted to have this level, they would just get a PlayStation or Xbox i guess.

I dont think the SGM support for Konami SCC, if so some of the better MSX titles could be converted (but need a lot of time, and hard work). Titles like NEMESIS 1,2,3 and Salamander.

I think the most close to a killer app, could be NEMESIS3, but it needs a SCC chip too.

Penguin Adventure, Maze Of Galious etc could run with the Current SGM. But I dont know if anyone are going to try to convert them, I seems like OPCODE are not so active right now.

Penguin Adventure would be close to a "killer" game to port to the CV with SGM and it would fit perfectly with the CV's library of games especially seeing that Antarctic Adventure is already available for the CV. It would be a great fit and a game that I would love to see made available one day even though I can play it thru BlueMSX.

The only thing is that it would still be a port from another system and not an original to the CV game... which I think people would appreciate a lot more.

Killer apps are coming, once I unclog the pipeline, which means, can ship more of the SGM itself. I will deliver on all the promised shot term titles...

Does this mean that we're in for another run of Thexder and, perhaps, a new port of, Silpheed?
