RickyDean
Wow! You're right, from a purely monetary point there is no contest. There is also the cost of the usb serial programmer that you would need to download and install the bootloader on the gotek, But I bought 2 for 5.99 free shipping. And can use them in other projects, like maybe burning new firmware on my ACARD 7722 SCSIIDE converter to use HDD's.
RickyDean
Well, I am now the proud owner of three Goteks and one HxC. I have successfully setup one Gotek with Jean's bootloader and am using it on one of my TI's. I will make a writeup of what I did and am doing to make it a success, like adding an LCD. With the Gotek I can use ,for storage, what ever I can format to FAT, or FAT32 and plug into the USB port on the Gotek.
99er
I posted here about it before, but I got one of the Gotek drives to work with my TI, but I found a seller on Ebay that had already installed the HxC bootloader so that it would work with the TI: http://99er.net/blog/blog/2016/05/06/using-a-gotek-floppy-emulator-with-hxc-on-my-ti-994a/ But, that's why the drive was $60 instead of $10. I also added a LCD and 3rd button. It was pretty easy once I figured it out: http://99er.net/blog/blog/2016/07/06/using-a-gotek-floppy-emulator-with-hxc-on-my-ti-994a-part-2/ I'd be really interested in how you load the bootloader on these. The seller I bought mine from made it sound like you needed to have a license in order to do it, so I never looked into it. I think I may have the needed cable around here somewhere. Rich If you go here you will find the necessary information to purchase the bootloader from Jean-François DEL NERO http://torlus.com/floppy/forum/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=1683. You would need the before mentioned serial programmer or similar and the software that Jean has listed on his site to connect. He has instructions there also. I have completed one Gotek( just need to get time to install the I2C LCD) and have successfully run the Menu program on the TI with it. I have two more that I am trying to see if there is a free alternative bootloader that would do the same thing as Jean's, to get the firmware installed. BTW, can anyone point me to the best software to read and copy from a HFE image? Edited July 22, 2016 by RickyDean
Omega-TI
BTW, can anyone point me to the best software to read and copy from a HFE image? Interesting request. I've not heard of any software that does that on the PC... yet. Currently the best way is by using the HxC or in your case the Gotek device. There are a couple of easy ways to transfer data from an .HFE file for editing or manipulation with TI99DIr, but both require an HDX modified TI RS-232 card. You can copy individual files from the TI to the PC using a program like DM2K or you can read an entire .HFE file on the TI and save it as a DSK file on the PC by using a program DSK2PC. +Schmitzi
If you have a HFE-File on the WIN-platform, you can use Lotharek´s tool to convert it to many formats, almost "all" given formats. But V9T9-DSK makes the sense here, of course, to go ahead with TI99DIR
RickyDean
Okay thanks, I had downloaded some hfe extension files from somewhere a couple of years ago and thought I had found a manager program to open them and work with the enclosed files, but can't find it so maybe I was thinking of a different format. +Schmitzi
If these are TI99-HFE-files it must work... If you want just send or post one of this files to have a look
Sinphaltimus
I'm not that sure how this works but I'd like to get my FDC modded to 80 track. Will that have an effect on the gotek? I'd prefer DSK1 -40 track, dsk2 80 and dsk3 gotek. What connection are you guys using for it?
+jedimatt42
To mod the tifdc, you just need to replace the eproms. (Desolder, install sockets, insert eproms) Straight ribbon cabling works, just use drive select jumpers on the gotek or disk drive. I've hated floppies for 32 years, so my gotek is Dsk1. Others probably have meaningful drive arrangements for actual usability reasons they could share...
+arcadeshopper
Well considering that on Ebay right now you can get one with the buttons and screen for less than 25.00 + the 10 euros for the bootloader to make it work like a HxC. No contest. I don't see any with the screen just the index alphanumeric
RickyDean
I don't see any with the screen just the index alphanumeric Sorry to not be clear, my fault, you can buy the Gotek without a alphanumeric display, just a bare Gotek without any way to see what is happening. The next step up is to buy one with either a 2 digit or 3 digit alphanumeric display. The only way to get a display that shows the drive name that is currently loaded, is to add the display that is talked about in other areas here on this forum. This has to be purchased and some soldering accomplished, but will result in a display that gives more details on the currently loaded disk. Hope this clears it up a little. The set up is still cheaper than a HxC, which I have one, and just as useful, though not quite as user friendly as the HxC.
+mizapf
Does Gotek use the same HFE format as Lotharek (which I just added to TIMT)?
+arcadeshopper
So basically i need the alphanumeric then? And then is there a specific display? Sent from my LG-H811 using Tapatalk

Sent from my LG-H811 using Tapatalk Greg, here is some info on the conversion and the display http://99er.net/blog/blog/2016/07/06/using-a-gotek-floppy-emulator-with-hxc-on-my-ti-994a-part-2/ hope this helps, I haven't gotten my display functional yet, but believe it will be well worth the effort.
Tursi
mizapf, on 06 Sept 2016 - 06:17 AM, said:Does Gotek use the same HFE format as Lotharek (which I just added to TIMT)? The short answer is yes. The long answer is that the Gotek itself doesn't work on the TI, it has to be flashed with the HxC firmware. I'm not sure if the "Lotharek firmware" is something different -- on http://lotharek.pl/product.php?pid=13 he just points to the HxC project page...? It's sure it's one and the same. Tursi
So basically i need the alphanumeric then? And then is there a specific display? Sent from my LG-H811 using Tapatalk The display is not mandatory, I'm running mine without. But without the display you are limited to naming your disk images by number (and selecting by number ). RickyDean
Does Gotek use the same HFE format as Lotharek (which I just added to TIMT)? Yes, as Tursi will point out below the bootloader for the processor inside the Gotek to make it compatible to the HxC and usable with the TI must be purchased see the following site http://torlus.com/floppy/forum/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=1683and you must have something like a usb to serial converter http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2057872.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.A0.H0.TRS5&_nkw=USB+To+RS232+TTL+UART+PL2303HX+Auto+Converter+USB+To+COM+Cable+Adapter+Module&_sacat=0 to get the bootloader downloaded to your gotek. +mizapf
Not going to buy one, but I'm just curious whether I'd have to implement yet another format in TIMT. Anyway, thanks for the information.

There is a way to pay for and unlock the license. http://torlus.com/floppy/forum/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=1683 Third bullet point. You might be looking at the HxC firmware for the Lotharek. Sinphaltimus
Short answer = Yes. Email him.I haven't received mine yet either and it's on its way. The firmware I believe we need is from here:http://hxc2001.com/download/floppy_drive_emulator/index.html#stm32hxcUnder this section: HxCFloppyEmulator software: When I read and search the release notes for TI99 - that is where I find the support in that particular download where as the others are stated for Amiga Amstrad etc..So I'm going to download that FW, and the on-line bootloader program from the same dl page. I think full instructions are included with that DL which I'm doing right now to find out. This is from the readme included in the zip file for the online-bootloader. To use it you need : -------------------- -> A STM32 based floppy emulator hardware to flash. -> A PC under Windows connected to Internet. -> Any 3.3V serial connection to connect the Floppy Emulator hardware to the PC. -> Your account information. Contact me to hxc2001()hxc2001.com to get your account. Edited September 9, 2016 by Sinphaltimus
