retrorussell
Hey folks, This is the old SNK title MAD CRASHER. It is a 3/4 perspective shooting/racing game with no finish line or real objective to speak of, just stay alive by avoiding or shooting enemy vehicles in a futuristic setting. Collision with an enemy, going off the track, falling through a hole or failing to make a jump (numerous ramps are in the game) will result in the destruction of your vehicle. Chances at brief invincibility (you can still fall to your death) present themselves on occasion. The music is repetitive and will test your patience. The action is actually fairly intense due to the tight quarters and moving enemies. Extra points are given after a jump and the amount of checkpoints you passed in the game are added after you lose your last life-- this may be enough of a bonus to grant you one more life! I never saw this one; for an early SNK title it's not too terrible.

+Charlie Cat
Hi guys, Simon Lock (Aergan) @A3rgan Dec 31, 2019 SNK NEO-GEO AES (NEO-O 9V) in for repairs. Bought as a pre-modded but apparently working system. The new owner had a few issues with the new UniBIOS installation, so it's here for that to be fixed and any other issues checked over. Let's have a look inside~ #SNK #NEOGEO #AES Simon Lock (Aergan)@A3rgan Dec 31, 2019 Starting from the bottom, the socket joins are re-flowed as I have at least one disconnected trace going on here. These boards are quite shit for THT rework and it takes little effort to cause de-lamination, so having to remove the existing socket must be with due cause. Simon Lock (Aergan) @A3r Dec 31, 2019 Bugger, that's a top side trace that's floating around. Repaired but may not be the only one to do. Simon Lock (Aergan)@A3rgan Dec 31, 2019 Well, at least it's showing something on screen now, but far from repaired. Simon Lock (Aergan)@A3rgan Dec 31, 2019 So, with a new jumper wire to fully connect that torn trace, we have entered the "watchdog" mode of the CPU resetting itself. Simon Lock (Aergan)@A3rgan Dec 31, 2019 Looks like that socket is coming out after all then. With the socket out ~ oh dear. It looks like I'll be needing the sewing kit. Simon Lock (Aergan)@A3rgan Dec 31, 2019 About as fun as it looks. Using enamelled copper wire to rebuild the traces and replace missing or compromised vias. Simon Lock (Aergan)@A3rgan Dec 31, 2019 Well, the good news is the BIOS is at least happy, the bad news is it looks like the RAM is bollocksed. Simon Lock (Aergan)@A3rgan Dec 31, 2019 New RAM arrived and all four modules are replaced. Simon Lock (Aergan)@A3rgan Dec 31, 2019 Much better! However video out kept dropping which appeared to be something amiss with the C-Sync output circuit. Restored original bypass back to normal. Simon Lock (Aergan)@A3rgan Dec 31, 2019 All good now - onto clean-up and reassembly. Simon Lock (Aergan)@A3rgan Dec 31, 2019 Fully reassembled and cleaned up. Anthony... +Charlie Cat
Hi guys, https://www.neogeokult.com/articles-us/snk-games-before-the-neo-geo/ By Tibe The SNK company, founded in 1978, has developed a lot of games for the arcades and some titles for 8-bit systems, before releasing the Neo Geo and MVS. This article's goal is to retrace the course of the company during the twelve years that preceded the advent of its famous 16-bit machine. This is the time to remember a few hits of the past, or maybe discover some marvels you never heard before... This is also an opportunity to highlight some filiations. You will discover in this article arcade coin-up released in the eighties that inspired some famous titles on the Rolls-Royce of videogames. Welcome dear reader, in the heart of the company that gave birth a few years later to the Neo Geo. SNK logo, back in the early eighties. FULL LIST OF SNK GAMES RELEASED BETWEEN 1978 & 1990 1979 Ozma Wars Safari Rally 1980 Sasuke vs. Commander 1981 Fantasy Satan of Saturn / Zarzon Vanguard 1982 Lasso Pioneer Baloon 1983 Joyful Road / Munch Mobile Marvin's Maze 1984 Gladiator 1984 Jumping Cross Mad Crasher Main Event Vanguard II 1985 ASO - Armored Scrum Object / Alpha Mission HAL21 T.N.K. III / T.A.N.K. 1986 Athena Ikari Warriors Meijinsen Victory Road 1987 Bermuda Triangle / World Wars Guerilla War / Guevara Mahjong Block Jongbou Psycho Soldier Touchdown Fever 1988 Chopper I Fighting Golf / Country Club Fighting Soccer Gold Medalist P.O.W. - Prisoners of War / Datsugoku - Prisoners of War Paddle Mania / Touchdown Fever 2 1989 Beast Busters Ikari III - The Rescue Mechanized Attack The Next Space Prehistoric Isle in 1930 SAR - Search And Rescue Street Smart Super Champion Baseball 1990 Crystalis During its first twelve years of existence, the firm managed to build a serious reputation in the world of arcades, and just by taking a look at the list above, you can see it's fulfilled with various great arcade games. The editor is present on all fronts, and tries its talent at many different styles, offering sometimes remarkable innovations. By 1990, SNK completely abandoned development on other arcade platforms to devote himself solely to MVS and AES. It would be difficult to present here all of the SNK titles released before the Neo Geo, but let's rather review a few emblematic games in which the firm has built its reputation and success, as well as other less famous ones, but which might have generated more or less recognizable filiations on the 16-bit system. SNK BEFORE THE NEO GEO PAGE 2 1979. Ozma Wars As one of the pioneers of modern Shoot them Up - in the line of Space Invaders - Ozma Wars is a fusion of this latter and a classic vertical scrolling game. In fact, your ship can only move sideways - and shoot, don't worry - but the enemy ships are coming from all directions, like in Alpha Mission for example. Running on a Z80 harware displaying two colors in 224x256, at the time, the game was beautifully crafted, featuring energy bars, which descend when you are hit, and can be reloaded during the levels. It's part of the infancy of vertical Shmup... 1980. Sasuke VS Commander Only game released by SNK this year, Sasuke vs. Commander was a small revolution in its time. In fact, the game was in color! And many, s'il vous plaît: no less than eight displayed simultaneously. The game features Sasuke (yourself), and you must protect the Shogun from ninja attacks. Armadas of them will wash over you while you'll desperately try to dodge while throwing shuriken. Innovative, right? Well actually, it is neither more nor less than the principle of Space Invaders once again resumed, but this time decorated with graphics of different stages and a smarter gameplay. Table-top cabinet Sasuke Vs Commander. 1981. Vanguard & Fantasy If the third title in the editor (Satan of Saturn) was just another improved version of Space Invaders, Vanguard and Fantasy are two great games that provide remarkable new features. The first looks like an horizontal Shoot 'em Up, but is in fact a multi-directional one, with simple but colorful graphics. The same year, Konami was counting on its Super Cobra, a direct competitor of SNK's game. Far from just only competing with its rival, this Vanguard was going to be one of the first big success of the firm. The game features high speed action and impressive scrollings, requiring cat reflexes to come through. The ship can fire in all directions and can catch bonuses making it invincible. A very good Shoot them Up, taking and stressful as possible, certainly standing as one of the distant ancestors of R-Type. About Fantasy, this one's a little more original. The game is quite successful graphically, alternating phases of platforms à la Donkey Kong, and other phases of platforms viewed from 3/4 high (à la Zombie ate my neighboors), and also phases of flight in a balloon, in which you have to avoid contact with enemies! A game full of fun, certainly, which suffered a little from the release of Donkey Kong the same year. After a few time and a series of quite mediocre arcade releases such as Lasso or Joyful Road, SNK began to develop on home system, in this case with the Atari 2600 adaptation of his hit Vanguard. The firm successfully revives in the arcade in 1984 with the successful Vanguard II or less known Main Event, a boxing game that knew a certain popularity. The company strikes a blow in 1985 with ASO, aka Alpha Mission, a remarkable vertical Shoot them Up that attracted attention back then. 1985. ASO ( Armored Scrum Object) First real vertical shooter of the firm, and ancestor of Alpha Mission II on Neo Geo, ASO looks pretty good in 1985! The game is beautiful and colorful, the animation is fluid and the gameplay fast and rich, with special weapons and bonuses to recover through the stages. In short, a great game that experienced great success in arcades, so much so that the game will be ported on the NES the following year. SNK reaches the next level... Now the editor has made himself a name with these titles that haven't gone unnoticed. 1986. Ikari Warriors Ikari Warriors is a milestone in the history of the firm. Acclaimed in the arcades and ported on almost every media of the planet (CPC 464, 6128, NES, C64, Amiga, PC, Atari 2600, 7800, Spectrum, MSX2, etc ...), the title generated huge profits for its editor. And for good reasons! In the midst of acute Ramboïte, the game was the icing on the cake: you simply incarnate two mercenaries in Vietnam. Apart from this, the game is technically excellent: cooperative play, new innovative gameplay (you can drive enemy tanks, pick special weapons...) plus nice graphics, great soundtrack and appropriate animation of excellent craftsmanship. SNK reaps the rewards of perseverance. However, the influence of Commando (Capcom) released the year before, is not negligible, as the game mechanics are almost the same, while the publisher added the cooperative play, new controls and vehicles. The first fruits of a Capcom/SNK war shall we say...? SNK BEFORE THE NEO GEO PAGE 3 In 1986 we note the appearance of the character Athena in the platform game namesake, and the following year in Psycho Soldier. It is fun to see that the company will resurrect this character years later in The King of Fighters saga. It will also be the case for Ralf, Heidern Clark who came from Ikari Warriors games. SNK rides on the success of its latest creations for some time, by porting its huge arcade successes on the most popular home systems. The publisher only release a few mediocre titles the next year, probably more focused on marketing than on creativity. 1987. Time Soldier But this was forgetting that Alpha Denshi - SNK's twin developing company - was working! The guys program the fabulous Time Soldier under the Romstar label in 1987. Vertical action shooter, the game immediately reminds Ninja Commando. The resemblance is striking! The game is fast, straight-forward, but so good! The scrolling is done alone, like in a Shoot them Up; the gameplay is looking like Commando, with the difference that in this one, you are heavily armed! Multiple shots, lasers, super attacks... Offering an unteresting cooperative play, Time Soldiers became an arcade classic, which will be adapted - among others - on Master System. Try this now, for those who yet don't know this great game! 1988. Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf SNK has always realized nice golf games, featuring a great gameplay, the most realistic and accurate as possible. And it is not the first of these, namely Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf, that will make me lie. Actually packing superb graphics back in its era, the game has perfect controls and proposed all the options! Supervised by a legendary golf player of the eighties, this SNK game was considered as the best of its kind. Offering to choose among four golfers and two different courses, the game was rich and pleasant, golf amateurs will not be deceived! Real arcade success, the soft was ported for the NES in 1988, and made very good sales. No doubt we are in the presence of Top Player's Golf's ancestor . Uhm... do these screens ring a bell? The same year, SNK Gold Medallist is released, and it is SNK's own interpretation of the famous Track'n'Field from Konami. And the game is just as great as that of the rival firm, but... it's way much harder! The reputation of SNK games for being incredibly difficult didn't happened yesterday... In addition, Gold Medallist was not very well distributed outside Japan, and the game were far less successful than the one on which it is based. 1988. Prisoners of War SNK uses the success of Rambo to sell games about war! First Beat them Up the firm, POW was an excellent fighting game, which could have had a sequel, but we didn't heard about anymore... no ports, no second round... and this is a shame, because we haven't seen much titles technically as good as this one on Neo Geo. You play as a prisoner of war (surprise) and your mission is to escape from the camp where you are retained. Punching, kicking, butting, jumps ... handguns, firearms ... the range of attacks is vast! Prisoners of War looks like a mixture of Renegade and Double Dragon. Beautiful, smooth, with a well-crafted gameplay, the game met some success in the arcades. Until the following year, when the Beat them Up makes a quantum leap with Capcom and its spectacular Final Fight. 1989.Gang Wars (Alpha Denshi) Gang Wars was a quite taking beat them up back then! Alpha Denshi's Gang Wars was released a few months before Capcom's most famous Beat them Up. When this one hits the arcades, it's one of the best ever published game of this kind, in line with Double Dragon. The soft is especially complete and taking with various blows, jumps, throws, numerous weapons, impressive bosses... programmers have even integrated a 'RPG' touch: depending on your performance, at the end of each stage you'll be able to improve your character. You will be granted a certain amount of points you can assign to one of your three characteristics: Power, Speed and Guard. This adds more interest to the game, already excellent! Sounds are very violent, graphics nice, animation damn well crafted... For a set of 87', this is really high quality! A BTU that has nothing to envy to Double Dragon, from the same era... SNK BEFORE THE NEO GEO PAGE 4 While 68k processors are emerging as the stomping hardware of arcade games editors in the late eighties, the quality of games' realization powers up with these more efficient processors allowing more fantasies. Capcom has understood that and released his own system in 1988: the CPS, aka Capcom's Play System. SNK like most other publisher continues to work on dedicated 68k-based hardware , and releases in 1989 great titles. And there's a good bunch of these! No less than eight titles emerge that year from Osaka's editor. Few will remember The Next Space, a rather simplistic vertical Shump, but saturated with ideas that will be included in Alpha Mission II; Super Champion Baseball, a very nice game of baseball, ancestor of the famous Baseball Star which will be released on Neo Geo the following year. Mechanized Attack is a quite successful Cabal-Like; in the same genre, including a lightgun - and playable up to three simultaneously - is also released Beast Busters quite popular in arcades. Also note Search & Rescue, a mediocre Beat them Up and Ikari Warriors III, another sequel - less striking - of the editor's classic hit. I only picked up two remarkable titles for this 1989 year I'd like to introduce you... 1989. Street Smart The action is limited and repetitive, but fun is here in Street Smart! While Capcom has already taken a step ahead by releasing its Street Fighter two years earlier, SNK releases its first Versus Fighting Game in the name of Street Smart. The game is not bad, and stands as a beautiful approach of the genre, still in its infancy, but it has several shortcomings. On one hand, you can move in depth, like in a Beat em Up. Capcom didn't make the same mistake when it designs Street Fighter on a single line. As a result, the range of moves is not very large and the game is halfway between BTU and VS Fighting Game... Yes, he's got the ass between two chairs. So the gameplay is pretty limited. You can play two against the CPU - which have reinforcements send too - but there's another big mistake: players can't challenge each other. A first attempt quite average, with a game that had a fairly limited success, and Street Fighter took two shots ahead... If the realization wasn't too bad, it was nothing exceptional too. SNK will work hard to get back into the race. If these two fighting games were not the revolutionary ones players were waiting for, these set the basics for the sequels. Prehistoric Isle PI first of the name is the first shooter in whixh you fight dinosaurs! Prehistoric Isle on its side, might be the most original and most beautiful Shoot them Up of its time. Far from R-Type in its approach, the game does not have much to envy it: splendid graphics, huge prehistoric monsters, epic atmosphere - feeling like in a Z movie from the seventies, smooth animation, gameplay which keeps you taped to the stick, and music and sound effects that will take you to hell. Yes, there's in this thing a very special atmosphere that might stick a lot of players to it, at least those who appreciate Godzilla and ninja movies, if you know what I mean: the same taste can be felt in Prehistoric Isle 2, released in 1999 on MVS. This Shooter is powerful. For a game of 1989, it's very fine, full of surprises, and simply a quality SNK game as we like to see. Crystalis, 1990, NES 1990. The Birth of the Neo Geo As you know, it was in 1990 that SNK released the MVS, and then the Neo Geo AES system. The only game published out of this new hardware simultaneously is Crystalis on NES, a sympathetic action RPG which encountered good critics. Therefore, the editor will devote only to its new system, leading a merciless competition to its rivals on the arcade market and aiming at a small niche with the expensive Neo Geo AES as a home console. SNK will release games on other media only through adaptations of its successful titles on consoles, often conducted by third-part developers. Anthony...
