I remember when SNK was SNK/Playmore and they were such dire need to raise profits so much that they used just about everyone of their franchises into Pachinko/slots youxia. The dance of getting an understanding of your opponent’s playstyle. The push-and-pull, back and forth swings in momentum until getting the better of your opponent. The thrilling victory or crushing defeat that comes from the conclusion of a match. Team multiplayer can be just as exciting, but doesn’t reach the intimate understanding you get of an opponent going solo. Windjammers 2 has come in lightning hot and could be the best game venue to beat your friends this year. For the uninitiated, Windjammers is a sequel to the Neo Geo Arcade competitive multiplayer game that’s part Pong, part soccer, part badminton. Two opponents line-up on the sides of a court with a net in center and something akin to a soccer net behind them. Instead of a ball, players throw a disc back-and-forth until it either slips past them into the net or gets slammed into the ground for points. Characters have a standard throw, an air volley, a dash, and a swat button. If the stick is given the proper circle motions at a throw, it adds a curve to the throw. The disc can also be tossed against the walls, making the return a matter of figuring out the geometry of where it’ll land. Beyond the standard back-and-forth volley, each character has a super move meter that once filled unleashes a unique, screen filling mess of a throw that is equally a sight to behold and a nightmare to keep track of. For scoring, each set goes to fifteen points, and the first to two sets wins the match. Most nets have portions that are yellow and red – yellow nets give you three points, and red five. There are several courts to choose from when matchmaking, all with their own unique modifiers. A few have brackets in the center that shots can be banked off or blocked by. Some have larger or smaller playfields than the standard size. One that’s a casino has the point value of each disc randomized – guess you better play sharp for that 8 point disc. In addition, the cast of competitors are equally diverse. Each has a balance of speed vs power, and their own distinct power moves. They are meaningfully different – the powerhouses can snap the disc so quickly that they can slam both you and the disc into the goal for points, while the more nimble ones can move briskly to grab a shot more out of reach and put a little more English on a throw. In short, each match is thrilling. The back and forth, building a breakneck speed seems the name of the game, but that is misleading. It’s tempting to take that fact with how exciting it is to win a snappy exchange that speeds up each throw like a runaway train, but success in Windjammers 2 is forcing the game to slow down to your level. Once you set the pace, it opens up several options of attack, from straight throws, bank shots, curveballs, and super moves. It makes those occasional quick shots more successful when they’re few and far between. Visually, Windjammers 2 is striking. The characters, arenas, and even menus are bold in color with deep border lines. The music is a perfect pairing to these 90s themed matches, great summer vibes with an upbeat tempo that accentuates it’s high energy, positive nature. While I didn’t know of the series Neo Geo origins, a side by side comparison reveals just how much effort was put into taking a great bone structure and renovating the exterior to breathe into it new life. It shows a reverence similar to what was given between the original Street Fighter 2 to the HD remix. It’s tough to find fault outside of a high difficulty curve, but those with patience will be rewarded with something special. Windjammers 2 exudes a larger than life personality and style, but it’s fundamental gameplay with its slew of ways to approach an opponent that gives it a robustness unrivaled by any competitive experience I’ve had in a long time.
