The Official NEO-GEO Thread!

So, Metal Slug X came in today. I think there's a chance it's my favorite in the series.

Metal Slug 3 is in theory, a lot better, with all its branching paths, new slugs, blood vomiting, etc, but it's also a much harder game at the core and I never get to see much of it since I don't continue. (There's no challenge on MVS with continues) Metal Slug X is certainly harder than 2 was, but nowhere near 3. It gives good challenge at difficulty 4, but I haven't reached a point where I think I'll never be good enough to progress. MS3 has quite a lot of those points, and I know if I practice super hard, and somehow get past my current trouble spot, there'll just be another one a minute or two later to kill me.

I should play MS 2 again, now that I'm getting myself acquainted with X. I suspect I'll find it a bit of a bland experience.

I wanted to play them again on the MVS too! Loved the MS series and was thinking of playing Metal Slug 5 because of the music was awesome!

I thought I was the luckiest kid in the world when I got the Neo-Geo for my 18th birthday in November 1990. It arrived about a week late, but I didn't care. No one else I knew had one. Feels like yesterday, not 24 years ago.

Interesting! Was it an American version? Silver or Gold?

It was ordered from California I believe, and was the Gold one. I think it was $599, but don't remember. It came with two controllers and Baseball Stars Professional. I still have the box. It is not fancy like the later ones. It's just white. I have the receipt somewhere.

That's sounds good! You must have received the Japanese version of the system! The American launch date wasn't till June of 1991.

I believe it was test marketed in the US in October or November of 1990. At the time I was on the phone all the time to SNK and read every gaming mag, and knew about the US release. I'm going to do more research and try and come back with a definite date.

Excellent, do you have any pictures of this system and the extras! If this is the case, you have a real gem here!

I can take the system out of my closet tonight when I get back home and take some pics if you would like. Apparently, the US release date is fairly disputed. Read this:

Did you ever hear of my company Zap!? I founded that fanzine in September, 1991. Even wrote many Neo-Geo reviews. :)

IMO, I push for 1991 for the release date because at my local game stores were getting ready for the Neo-Geo! I saw that on the neo-geo.com forums and the problem was distribution! The guys in California got it fast, while people in the east cost received later People like you did and got it in CA were better off going the extra mile! ;-)

I might have heard of Zap in the past, but I was more towards the Gamepro and EGM at that time at 8 years old! If you did some Neo-Geo reviews, that's wonderful! Your welcome to share it on this thread! People here would love to view it! ;-)

Do you still have your games for the system? Would love to see that system of yours now more than ever!

I sold a few of the games, including one to go to a prom in 1992 lol. I still have Baseball Stars, Magician Lord, Fatal Fury, and King of the Monsters. I am leaving to go out now, expect to see pics tonight. :)

BTW, if you want to join the Zap! Group, feel free. I'll have pics up there later as well.

Here are two quick pics. Had to dig these out of my closet, and it's a bit dusty, but here it is:

As you can see, it says NEO-AEC, not AES. It is indeed a US system.

Truly remarkable! :-o

An early released Neo-Geo NEO-AEC system with the early white box! You were those original owners when the system debuted! Someone really liked you for giving you this gem on your birthday! :-D

What's is the serial number on this beauty?

Thank you for showing it to us!

Yep, a low serial numbered Neo-Geo System! Early motherboards such as this one contained daughterboards used to enhance the clarity of the video output! Like other systems that have 2nd,3rd, or more of the edition for the systems in their lifespans, the companies usually find cheaper parts to make them and to help bring prices down for the unit! Glad you still have it after 20+ years!

Today I finally got around to ordering Kizuna Encounter, the sequel to Savage Reign and yet another SNK fighting game set in South Town (this time in the distant 'futuristic' world of the 21st century). It's got some neat tag-in gameplay, but I'm not really into fighting game mechanics. I bought it specifically because it has cool backgrounds and big, detailed characters. As I understand it, Kizuna Encounter is a fairly expensive title on the home side of life, but in MVS land it's priced low enough to be a 'that looks neat' whim.

Changing the subject, my MVS cabinet is kind of a cruddy conversion that's quite functional, but not exactly pretty. A few weeks back I picked it up a proper 1-slot marquee, and since then I've been snatching up lots of mini marquees. I think I only had 3 before, but I've got 9 more on order. Great, now I've got something else to collect... I've got a plan in my head to make a quick change feature for the marquees with some neo magnets along the top and a piece of rubber to serve as a crude hinge on the bottom. It's no collector piece, so I'm not really worried about 'ruining' it, but it is about time that I showed it some love. I haven't touched it much since I got the Omega.

Nice video. I enjoy Kizuna Encounter as well and its on my wish list for the AES! The European version is said that only 5 have been known to shown to exist and it goes for thousands of dollars! Would love to have that in my collection!

Nice pick up on the cabinet! If it works, plays and your having a blast with it. That's all that matters! ;-)

Hi guys,

This morning, I decided to take out Ragnagard for the AES! This game was also on the MVS, AES, Sega Saturn as well! Ragnagard was developed by a company called System Vision and was published by Saurus! The game is interesting and a nice to have in your collection! having a 2.5D type feel for a system that is known for 2D gaming!

Hi guys,

Hmmm, it seems that NGDEVTEAM will be doing a re-release of the original Last Hope that came out in 2006! Thistime without sacrificing a cartridge and case! This is what they had to say from an e-mail!

"Hi,

we will probably do this one day. Mostly to offer an English version though. We will do this in a year were we only have one other AES release."

Also on Neo-Geo CD.

Just to avoid confusion with another Neo-Geo game

Ragnagard (JP version Shin Oh Ken)

Zed Blade (JP version Operation Ragnarok)

I have seen confusion between those 2 games frequently.
