I've been curious to try that one but the kanji looks like it would be a problem. Really wish there were some usable translation hacks for that system.

I really should take the tools that wyndcrosser was doing for a few things on NGPC and see if I can figure them out. If I could get a script of all text dropped from some NGPC games I think I could do some translation at some level, at the least menus and things. Story would be more of a challenge as I'm super rusty.

I think you'll like it despite that the home console versions are better. But I do have to admit that a lot was put into it for it to be playable. :)

Hey folks,

Just uploaded my newest NEO GEO review-- a Snow Bros. ripoff called NIGHTMARE IN THE DARK. Sorry Anthony; but this really is too close to Snow Bros., although you can grab the prone enemies (enclosed in a giant fireball) and bring them to higher levels with you to throw at your leisure, unlike Snow Bros.. but that's really the only technical difference. A weird jazzy theme is played amid the dark surroundings (a cemetery). Like Bubble Bobble, you can fall through gaps in the floor to reappear at the top. Boss fights (just like in Snow Bros.) require you to toss the common enemies that the boss releases back at him to hurt him. IMHO not that great a game, and the appeal for Bubble Bobble/Snow Bros. types of games is nearly a decade bygone in 2000!

I don't think you followed what I was getting at.

I'm saying I'm willing to do some NGPC game translations, but I can not for the life of me figure out how to use the tools to do it.

I need to find the table (how?)

Extract the table (how again?)

And then from that extraction pull the script of the game (how??)

If I could get a script I could then translate it, then windhex I could use if I could figure that one out entirely, to inject english into the japanese spaces.

I figured Rockman would be easy enough as there's not much written into that game.

Sorry, my error Tanooki. Trying to do eight things at once before hitting the sack.

Anyway, have you tried asking James here (RetroHQ) about your concerns? I'm sure he can assist or help tutor you with it seeing he knows the NGPC very well.

I don't think he would know about how to dissect a script from a video game as it's a bit different than just making a kit that takes a copy of a game and runs it in his little menu driven toy there so no I hadn't asked.

I'd rather like to know how to do it than have it done for me, but whatever the end result is, if I can get the script to some NGPC games in Japanese I'd like to take a stick and poke at it a bit and see if I can do it or not. I'd start small with Rockman or other fighting types or minimal language stuff just so I can work out from there as my Japanese is rusty.

How about heading over on neo-geo.com and see what they have to say. Very knowledgeable members in the tech field that can most likely be able to help.

Jeff Kurtz, Razoola, Xian Xi are just the few off the top of my mind.

I have a question. What were the stripes of the neo geo games on us box art. I know fighting and action games are red colored. I know that sports games are green. And I know shooting games are blue. But sometimes I see red stripes on shooters like viewpoint and also I sometimes see yellow stripes. So what are the types of colors on US boxart?

Hey Evan,

From what I remember, it represents the genre of the game that SNK had in mind. But it wasn't consistent. If you look at games like the Metal Slug 1,2, and 3, they were blue stripes. But X,4, and 5 were red. The majority of the games that were in stripe form was in the color red by SNK.

The overall official colors were

Red

Blue

Green

Yellow Stripes I believe are not official from SNK. But you see them on Diggerman, The Irritating Maze, and Crossed Swords II from NeoGeoFreaks.

No Orange stripes.

Hey Russ,

Thank you taking my request and glad you shared this as always with us. I thought Nightmare in the Dark is a fun game. It just came at the time when SNK was trying to push anything out at the time when it was in its financial crisis.

Keep up the great work as usual bro.
