Actually, I think it's about time to review this cart, so why not? Basically, this isn't like most other ROM carts. Put the games on the SD card and then put the SD cart in the cartridge and then put that inside your Neo Geo like normal, but then you have to choose up to 3 games to load into any of the 3 slots that are available and then you can launch any of the 3 selected games. You can't just launch any game you want at any time from the games list like most other carts like this, but this doesn't really bother me because the time that it takes to load the games is very fast. I tried loading 3 of the biggest games that I know of, KOF 2003 (716 megs, biggest game on the system), KOF '98 (683 megs), and Mark of the Wolves. I'm actually not sure exactly how big that last one is, but I'm guessing it's pretty big because of the beautiful sprite animations, and anyway this combination loaded within only a few seconds. Each game is loaded separately and it tells you which game is currently loading, so you can actually see how long it takes for each individual game to load. It seems to automatically run whatever game is in slot 1 once this process is done. You can change the game you are playing by holding Start + left or right for about 3 seconds at any time or return to the menu with Start + up for about 3 seconds, but this can be temporarily disabled in the menu. I don't know why you'd want to do that unless you are an arcade operator and you want to prevent people from accidentally changing the game, but it's there if you want it. I guess this specific setting can't be saved and will revert back once you power cycle the system because otherwise you would never be able to get back to the menu! Once you power cycle the system, you will see the games that you chose to load the last time you used the cart are still there and you can launch any of them or go to the menu. One of those prisoner dudes from Metal Slug will walk onscreen and give you a countdown that will automatically send you to the menu if it reaches 0. The length of this countdown can be adjusted from 0 to 9 seconds, but there is no option to stay at that screen eternally. If you set it to 0 seconds, the dude walks out, displays the 0, and then goes back immediately, so it's not actually 0 seconds, but that's what the options menu says. What DOES bother me is that the games list seems to use some sort of dynamic resolution that is based on the length of the title of the game that you currently have highlighted, and some of the settings menus also seem to do this, as well. This is not a problem on a CRT, but with the OSSC, I loose sync literally every 2~5 seconds when looking scrolling through the list of games. This is annoying and I wish that it wasn't like this, but that's how it is and it doesn't take too long for the OSSC and my monitor to resync so the only thing I can do about it is to either be annoyed and deal with it or buy a TV stand or something else to put my Trinitron on so I don't have to sit on the floor to see it properly. The cartridge lets you choose between Japan, USA, and Europe as well as AES and MVS modes. Games that don't have an AES release, like Shock Troopers, run perfectly in AES mode, probably because the MVS and AES are basically identical anyway aside from the AES essentially having its own internal DIP switch settings. Both MVS and AES modes let you change DIP switch settings for each of the 3 games that you have loaded. I'm not sure why you'd specifically want one specific mode over the other when both modes give you access to the DIP switches, but maybe there is something that I do not know about or perhaps the DIP switch settings only affect MVS mode. The cart's DIP switch settings menus are entirely in Japanese if the cart's region is set to Japan, so if you can't read that language, you may have some difficulty with that. There are no language options for the cart itself, so I hope you can read English. I'm still getting some weird glitching on KOF 2003 and also some random pixels in the overscan areas in some games, but that's the overscan area and it's not uncommon for garbage pixels to show up in the overscan areas on other systems, so I am guessing this is normal behaviour for the Neo Geo as well. Maybe KOF 2003 is a bad ROM (although it shouldn't be since I got it from the Smokemonster ROM set that was built specifically for the Darksoft cart), but other than that, I have had none of the bad experiences that I had with the other cart. I may come back later if there is anything else that I'd like to say about this cart, but overall this is how I feel about it now. After some more research, it seems this is apparently a problem with the firmware and is being worked on. Disappointing, but at least I know my cart is good this time. No issues with the cart's menu this time and nothing that has impacted my ability to actually play anything, so for now, while I can't say that I am 100% satisfied with this cart because of this issue, I do like it overall since most games (specifically the ones that I actually want to play) do not seem to be affected by this problem. Hopefully this issue gets fixed in the near future. So anyway, about Shock Troopers. There seem to be 2 versions of this awesome game, one of which has your 3 characters share the same life bar and one of which gives them separate life bars. I do have both versions of this game on my cart, but I definitely prefer the second version where everyone has a separate life bar. Jump to 4:28:It was on the scaled-down Fatal Fury or Garou Densetsu logo. It would also cause occasional specs and vertical lines on character sprites. It was much worse in some consoles than others.
