I think I'll throw you all a research scavenger hunt for fun... NeoGeo, on Gameboy (and I mean GB and GBC, not Advance)

How many games can you find that got released, and hint, they're not just fighting games. :)  A few hit the US, EU even got in on the action, but most stayed in Japan.

Welp, let's take a look at the ol' Game Boy box of games I have and see what I have to start off with names.

Hmmm...Got a good amount of SNK titles here in Japanese that were Neo-Geo ports to name....Okay here they are

Samurai Sprits

Samurai Sprits III

World Heroes 2 Jet

King of Fighters 95 & 96

Real Bout Fatal Fury Special

Oh! I have a Funny Field (Dexterity in U.S.) I forgot I had this besides the U.S. version,

WOW! A Crystalis. I didn't even remember buying this. That's nice to know. I have to play this one when I have the chance.

Here's my list Tanooki. You mention Neo-Geo on Game Boy and Game Boy Color, but I added two non Neo-Geo titles from SNK titles since I happen to find them in by box to list as well.

Curious on what you have to say about these games that you like to list that were not just fighting games to hit the US, EU, and Japan bro. ;-)

I found what looks to be a US copy of KOF '94 recently in town. I was thinking of buying it, but I'm not sure. There was also a copy of the Japanese version at the same store. The only difference between the Japanese and international versions of Neo Geo games is the sticker on the cart, the box art, and the instructions, and since my Neo Geo is Japanese, it will run all games in Japanese anyway. One of them is considerably cheaper (I think it's the US one) and in worse condition, but it's still not bad. I might get it if it's still there eventually, but maybe not.

I've been looking around for a copy of Garou Densetsu recently, and I think I mentioned it before, but I have not been able to find a copy for several months now. I did try Real Bout on my Darksoft cart recently and I thought the 3 plane thing with the out of bounds areas was really interesting, so I might go buy Real Bout soon, as there are multiple copies available. Not sure where I should go next from here, though. There are not a lot of AES games around here that are affordable, unfortunately. Yes, I'm still thinking about that Mark of the Wolves! I may get it at the end of this month, though, as painful as it will be.

Definitely the Neo Geo could have really produced some great sports titles.  Granted, the ones already on there are pretty good, but one wonders what all could've been done on the platform.  Hopefully this title and many unreleased titles are ROM dumped and released for people to try one day.

I've never heard if this before! Always interested in unreleased games. They are a great mystery

I have to say this Steve. King of Fighters 94 is the most common title out of the series for the Neo-Geo. However, trying to find a perfect 10 out of 10 condition of it is actually difficult to come by these days. Every time I use to see actions off Ebay, they had stains on the inserts, manuals ripped, carts that have scuff marks/scratches  on them. We have a member by the name of 16bites that was on the constant search of having a copy for the AES in showroom condition, and it taken him months to find one that looked like it came off the assembly line. Same with me, so I found one in Japanese that I finally wanted and added it to the collection.... What a royal pain that was.

If you're looking for a copy of Garou Densetsu Steve. I found a seller that offers one complete with a "Best Offer" option as well. He's from Japan. Not a bad price and I think you can get it down to $10-15 dollars less.

We've written before about the challenges of preserving rare games for obscure platforms, but what about games that are so obscure that they weren't even announced to the public before being shelved? Such is the case of this mysterious, incomplete fighting game that was unearthed earlier this April.

SNK's Neo-Geo console was an oddity of gaming history: a console system designed to be identical to their then high-end arcade hardware. Both the system and the games were premium priced, with cartridges selling for around $200 in 1990s money. The "elite" perception of the console, combined with some fantastic games and a cult of personality around manufacturer SNK, created a fervent Neo-Geo fanbase that thrives to this day. Neo-Geo fans are among the most devoted of game collectors, willing to drop a lot of cash on rare cartridges (some of which, it turns out, have been elaborate forgeries) and constantly scouring all ends of the internet for Neo-related paraphernalia.

Brian Hargrove is one such Neo devotee. He's been keeping an eagle eye on Japan's biggest auction site, Yahoo! Japan Auctions, for everything Neo-related, and using a proxy bidding service to purchase things that catch his eye. Hargrove caught a glimpse of one auction that looked like Neo-Geo development hardware and pulled the trigger to the tune of about $750. He'd seen similar boards in years past, so he had a vague idea of what he was getting, though there was still a lot of mystery surrounding the auction.

THE BOARD, UP AND RUNNING. IMAGE CREDIT: BRIAN HARGROVE

"I had no idea what [the game data on the board] was," Hargrove tells us. "There was nothing on the board indicating who had used it or where it came from."

Hargrove had come across a few early prototypes of Neo-Geo games in his collecting adventures, and most of the data on those games was contained on EPROMs."The one thing that gave me hope was the fact that this dev board contained flash cards and had a different layout than any other board I have come across… If anything, I assumed I'd have a cool piece of SNK history and possibly an early version of something we already knew about." In fact, it took him a while before he went about trying to see what was on the boards. "The program EPROMs said that the game was Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer, an already known and released game. I assumed I had an early build of VFG and didn't really put a lot of time into getting it working. I waited about a month before I really sat down with it, but it didn't take too long once I focused."

In order to read the flash cards, Hargrove also had to invest in special hardware. "I did a lot of testing on several different flash cards before I dared to try and read the proto's flash cards. I wanted to make sure I wouldn't damage them."

There were a few hurdles in the way of getting the data off of the board. Hargrove discovered that two of the memory cards were completely unreadable—they had used batteries that had long since given up the ghost. "One of the cards contained things like font information and overlay graphics like power and super bars. This also may have contained the game's name and logo. The other card most likely contained the game's sound effects." The game wouldn't load up without the font data, so Hargrove had to whip up a makeshift ROM to use as a replacement. "When I booted the game without a working font ROM, it was completely blank. Mainly because the game boots to a text menu first and you have to select "FIGHT!" to start playing. When I initially loaded the new font ROM the game still didn't play. It wasn't until I looked deeper at the graphics ROMs that I realized that the flash cards were mislabeled. So with the graphics cards in the right slots, and the new font rom loaded, I was able to play it."

Here's the game running at Midwest Gaming Classic convention in Milwaukee.

What was revealed was a very early build of a fantasy-themed fighting game. Characters appeared to have Dungeons & Dragons style alignments—Lawful, Neutral, and Chaotic—but many of them had unfinished graphics, or were simply unplayable. Stages also changed appearance based on the time of day, The Neo-Geo community has spent a great deal of time documenting information on unreleased games, but nothing about this title seemed to have ever been shown to the public before. Whatever it was, though, it looked like it had been a very ambitious project.

As a longtime member of the Neo-Geo.com forums (under the name "NeoTurfMasta"), Hargrove was eager to share his find with fellow Neo fans. "I really hoped people would be excited and happy to see it. I wanted to do something special and unexpected for the reveal so I did a surprise meeting at the Midwest Gaming Classic in Milwaukee." He posted details about the game on the forums soon afterwards. It didn't take long for news of the find to spread across the globe back over to Japan.

Some folks who had worked on the game saw the news and spoke up about it. First was graphic artist Takumi Matsumae, who had been working as an art subcontractor on the title. Then Kouji Ogata, another artist, chimed in as well, revealing some additional details. It had been theorized by Neo fans that the game was being made at Technos, the company behind the classic Double Dragon franchise, before they went bankrupt in 1996. This turned out to be partially correct—the game was first under development there before several of the staff members joined another company called FACE, taking the in-development title along with them. The project name was said to be Dragon's Heaven.

Not long after, the game's producer, Kengo Asai, chimed in on an interview on Japanese site ITmedia. He divulged several details about the game, which have been translated by fighting game fansite Madman's Cafe. The game never received an official title, being called both DarkSeed and Dragon's Heaven at various points. During the course of the game, player choices and actions would affect a character's alignment. This would also affect gameplay based on the in-game time of day: Lawful characters would be stronger during daylight, while Chaotic characters would be boosted at night. Sometimes characters themselves would change during certain time periods: one concept featured a pair of cursed lovers, transforming into animals during day or nighttime, never to meet again in their human forms.

"DarkSeed went through pending [put on the development backburner] for two times due to funding issues, and then faced official cancellation," says Asai in the article. "Development PCBs aren't really supposed to leak out, so there's a part of me that's a bit distraught about that. However, it's been 20 years. As of now, I salute NeoTurfMasta for his discovery, luck, passion, and knowledge. Personally it wasn't all fond memories, so together with my surprise and joy, I also sort of felt the fear of something coming back and haunting me from 20 years ago. I haven't changed that much, but it sure brought back memories of how inexperienced I was back in my youth."

Hargrove is happy that Asai and others who were involved have spoken up about the game. "I just hope [Asai] is not upset about it and sees that people are very excited," Hargrove comments. He also hopes that this find will encourage people with access to unreleased development material to share what they have. "There are still several known games out there [that haven't been shared]. Most are owned by private collectors that have no desire to share it with the world. I really wish they would reconsider and see how happy this makes people… If this doesn't convince the collectors to dump them, maybe some developer will dust off their cart or dev kit and release it. Now I really think there may be more unknown [Neo] games out there."

Hi guys,

GAMING HEARTS COLLECTION

Could Neo Geo X have more successful during the 00’s?

img_5758.jpg?w=780

There are many people who probably don’t remember the Neo Geo X from ’12 since it was only available in retail for a short period of time. The Neo Geo X was developed by SNK Playmore and was released in America for the price of $199. The cool thing about Neo Geo X is that it was a hybrid console similar to that the Nintendo Switch. The Neo Geo X also contained at least 20 built in games such as Art Of Fighting, Metal Slug, Samurai Showdown, Fatal Fury and many others. In fact, the Neo Geo X seemed like a cross between the Nintendo Switch and the SNES Classic and was way ahead of its time following its release. The SNES Classic along with the Nintendo Switch did not come out until ’17 and both game systems were huge attractions within retail following their respective releases. But considering how popular Nintendo is within the gaming world the success of the Switch and the SNES console should not come as much of a surprise to anyone. SNK on the other hand was never quite as popular as Nintendo back in the 90’s, 00’s or the 10’s decade despite have optimal quality 2D classics from the 16-bit/32-bit era.

img_5759.png?w=780

However, it should be noted that over the past few decades Nintendo’s games along with their quality have evolved greatly since the 90’s. While the Neo Geo X looked somewhat similar to that of Nintendo Switch it did not contain any brand new games from 10’s. Instead, the Neo Geo X had the same old games from the 90’s that have been re-released for multiple game systems whether it be the PS2, Wii, PSP or the Switch console. Nintendo had developed brand new game for the Switch including Super Mario Odyssey, Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and many others with optimal high definition 3D visuals; which ended selling millions worldwide within a few years. Even though, Neo Geo X was a flop in America back in the early 10’s some believe that it could of had more success during the 00’s decade. The concept of a hybrid console was never an idea among Sony or Nintendo executives back in 00’s and would of be considered innovative during that decade. But since Neo Geo arguably peaked in popularity back in the early to mid 90’s would be difficult to determine how successful it could of been in the 00’s. By the mid 00’s many people either owned a PS3 or Xbox 360 and were into first person shooting games; while seeing 2D video games as obsolete or boring. Its quite possible that the Neo Geo X would have been a little bit more successful during the 00’s. But sales-wise the Neo Geo X probably would have still been a flop seeing how competitive things were between Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo were during the 00’s.

Anthony..

Lots of Japanese ebay sellers don't ship to Japan even though they are in Japan, for some reason, and this seems to be one of them.

Still, I'll look around for it some more. I actually found a copy of it several months ago but I didn't buy it because of its price. I think it was 17000 yen or something like that.

As for KOF '94, I've actually only ever seen those 2 copies in town! Maybe people just buy it because it's not too expensive but still a good and historically significant game. You are definitely right that a lot of the older AES titles are hard to find in excellent condition. Most of the older games that I see have dirty box art, and of course there are the wrinkles from the softboxes that are basically unavoidable, as well. I've been looking for a Garou Densetsu 2, as well, and every single copy I have found has yellowed and dirty looking box art! It's frustrating. Hard box games are definitely easier to find in nice condition.

Speaking of hard box games, I found a Garou Densetsu 3 for around 7000~8000 yen recently. I might have to buy that one if it's still there, but I'm not sure if I should get 3 or Real Bout first if I only want to get them one at a time. I think Real Bout is slightly more expensive, but not by much.

That's a solid start there, you knocked out the fighting games (they also did Battle Arena Toshinden in the US, and Transformers Beast Wars in Japan too using the same engine.)  But there were more that went beyond fighting.  Not expensive thankfully but harder to come by as it's Japan only but Money Puzzle/Idol Exchanger hit the Gameboy.  Also Bust a Move 2 is on the GB too which did hit the US.  Of course there were more BAM games on the GB and GBC too finally getting the color it needed but BAM2 was it for Neo-Geo overlap.

The only reason I limited it to 8bit is that because GBA is just too easy as you have both King of Fighters and Metal Slug Advance there.

I used to have Crystalis for GBC and annoyingly I'm looking to buy it right now but at the moment scum are trying to squeeze an added $10 out of it from where it usually sells which is a shame as I have a homeless manual for it that needs a game so it's going to happen.  Shame they downgraded the music in the game over the NES original which I do still have.  The other one, Dexterity I've never played it as I tend to get a bit picky about puzzles.

Oh right!! Battle Arena Toshinden with Takara. I completely forgot about that Tanooki. Thanks for reminding me. If you didn't mention it, it would've never remembered it. I don't have that one in the collection, so now i have to add it to the list.

I had no idea with Transformers Beast Wars and Money Puzzle/Idol Exchanger for the Game Boy. That I didn't know. So reading this from you is very informative for me and the rest of the members to know. Now you gotten me curious.

This really is fun with this research scavenger hunt Tanooki. Enjoyed looking at the games to search in the boxes and learning knowledgeable information from you bro. Looking forward on the next one from you. ;-)

Yesterday there was a neo geo Xeno Crisis update after about half a year of radio silence, which was a little longer than I'd rather, and longer than typical for them. (link)

To summarize: blah blah, troubleshooting, blah blah, finishing up, blah blah

and then it gets considerably more interesting:

The remaining bits of software development are shrinking by the day, most focus at the moment is on Neo Geo specific polish, things like scaling sprites, extra frames, more palettes, better colour depth than the Mega Drive (like in the HQ above), more sprite details. We expect to go gold very soon, and we will let you know when we do!

and then a comparison screenshot between a genesis background and a neo geo one.  Indeed there is slightly more color (or at least improved color choices) that I can see, and it'd be interesting to know if they animated those wall lights, etc. I suspect if that was the case, it'd be an animated pic instead.  The big deal is that neo geo is now confirmed to have additional polish improvements over genesis, which is about the first I've heard that in such a concrete way.

I'm pretty excited, since this is my first time going in on a pricey neo homebrew.  It's well over twice as much as I've ever spent on any video game before, since most of my more wallet-punishing neo titles were purchased in a very different pricing era. (I think my blazing star, magical drop iii, MOTW cost me all of ~$50 each)

Hey Reaper.

Me too. I was reading the update of the news regarding the game and can't wait. Exciting times for sure. I would love to play this on the Neo-Geo and glad Bitmap was able to answer some of my questions that I had in mnd in the news update that they offered. ;-)
