roadrunner #4 Posted March 29, 2014 Are you the n***m buyer? If something has a bid on it someone else shouldn't be able to buy something from the lot. The seller coulda got at least $225 for it, that's his loss. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Atari-2600-Superman-Sears-CIB-Game-instruction-manual-and-box-NTSC-/151219631579?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item23356475db
CPUWIZ #5 Posted March 29, 2014 No, the two or three items I need are 5 digit items. You need to learn how to side deal, then you wouldn't have to bitch about it all the time.

Yeah, I have no luck trying to side deal something. There's a game I offered $30 the seller told me its worth $60 - $70 I talked to another person here on AA about it, he told me $30 seemed to be a fair price.
Atari_Bill #7 Posted March 30, 2014 If there's a bid on it aren't there rules against side dealing? Obviously it happens I'm not stupid enough to say it doesn't I'm just more than a little shocked that it seems to have become an accepted practice. Why have rules when people feel they don't apply to some?

Why have rules when people feel they don't apply to some? There are rules, but those rules seem to get bent and/or broken all of the time on eBay...which surprises me. I understand that eBay is well known for being the slime pit that it is these days, but I would expect eBay to seriously frown on the side dealing...simply because it takes money out of their pocket. Perhaps I am missing something, but if you side deal an item, then eBay doesn't get there percentage on the sale...correct?
CPUWIZ #9 Posted March 30, 2014 Depends on how you do it.
Atari_Bill #10 Posted March 30, 2014 That was pretty much my point. Those rules create a level playing field (or should) for everyone. I just find it despicable when side deals are reached when a deal is already in the process of being negotiated via an existing bid.
OldSchoolRetroGamer #11 Posted March 30, 2014 Huh interesting to see peoples views and opinions regarding the practice of "side dealing" if not surprising.......I think it is a pretty low and despicable practice myself regardless of how it's done but hey whatever, true colors show through.........

Zwackery #13 Posted March 30, 2014 I've been using eBay since December 1997. In all that time, I think I've contacted maybe 3 different sellers about selling me an item while an auction is active. In none of the cases did I make contact while a bid had been placed. I think once someone has placed a bid, the auction should have to run as advertised. In all cases, I made what I thought was a fair market value for the item (so no low-balling but no irresistible offer either) because it was something I wanted. In 2 out of 3 of the cases, I heard nothing back from the seller. In the third, the seller agreed to sell me an item. To keep things fair, he ended the auction, removed the item, and started a new auction for what was left. I don't think we did a BIN for the solo item, so in that respect eBay got cut out of the sale, but the seller sent me an invoice through PayPal (to protect his sale and my purchase), so eBay still got a cut through their PayPal holding.

In my mind, there is little difference between side dealing when there is an active bid and simply walking away after placing the winning bid without paying. Both are against the rules so why shouldn't I be able to bid something up to 4 figures and simply decide that I don't really want it after all? I wouldn't do that any more than I would try a side deal on an active bid.
