Greg2600 #6 Posted April 2, 2014 8-bit Cinema has some great videos like that.
robotwo #7 Posted April 4, 2014 Why must they ruin it by having text scaling as it pleases and having inconsistent resolution? Most of the graphics are nabbed and it feels quite half-arsed at times to be honest (like at 1:53 a huge chunk of the tree-top is offseted). This could've been done so much better. Can't say I've really watched many "8-bit cinema" videos, but I can't really say I'm impressed with this. Yeah, it's always a interesting concept to take something modern and redo it based on older hardware. But if you do, you really need to get it right. You can't just throw together various low-res graphics of completely different palettes and specs and be like "It's 8-bit". Consistency would be nice. robotwo #9 Posted April 4, 2014 Deserving.... Yeah sorry, I'm not a very big fan of people who take a picture, make it low res and calls it 8-bit. Games and movies that strive to be technically accurate will always be ranked higher in my book. But I can see why some people would like the vid, but I guess it's not just something for me. You have to agree that the text constantly changing resolution is very off-putting though
Greg2600 #10 Posted April 5, 2014 I really do not follow your logic. "Take a picture, make it low res" What does that mean? They didn't take anything, it's artwork/animation created from scratch in a certain style. I also do not notice text constantly changing resolution. Maybe you need to watch it in 720p mode or something?
robotwo #11 Posted April 5, 2014 (edited) They didn't take anything, it's artwork/animation created from scratch in a certain style. I also do not notice text constantly changing resolution. Slapped together a quick little example of some of the parts I meant. If you know how many systems of the time handled graphics, they used tiled graphics. They usually only had one fontset since that could eat up quite enough space in the tile memory. And I just doubt it would be worthwile to have yet another fontset for each font scale/ resolution. That would just eat tile space and memory for a very minimal difference. I also noticed that Smaug is the final boss from King of Dragons and that they used the chests from Final Fantasy Tactics. I'm fairly sure the ground is made up of parts from either a FF Tactics, Black Matrix or Ogre Tactics (or possibly some other tactics rpg) game, but I can't really find the specific tilesets they've used in that case On some parts it's VERY noticeable that some parts are far away from the same art style (Ogres and Horses vs Background on the first battle for example). And the whole "Take a picture, make it low res" part is just a reflection over some people's mindset as to what defines an 8-bit game. OldSchoolRetroGamer #12 Posted April 5, 2014 Ha Ha Ha ..................omg.....NOBODY CARES! IMHO making waaaaaay to much out of a fun little animation. Geez can't people just enjoy something without over analyzing every friggin little detail?
robotwo #13 Posted April 5, 2014 Well it's a forum thread, it's supposed to contain discussion isn't it? Won't be much of a discussion if we all just go along and say "hmm, that's nice".
Greg2600 #14 Posted April 5, 2014 I think you're just screwing with us now. I still do not comprehend what on earth you're complaining about. It's a novelty channel on YouTube not a Pixar movie.

robotwo #17 Posted April 5, 2014 I think you're just screwing with us now. I still do not comprehend what on earth you're complaining about. It's a novelty channel on YouTube not a Pixar movie. I'm neither screwing with you or "complaining" really. I'm just looking at the video in a more critical sense I really have nothing against the video and I'm sure lots of effort went into making the actual animation part. It just feel like it would be worth giving credit where credit is due (where they took the art assets from for example). The whole thing about being more technically accurate to 16-bit systems of the time is a personal nitpick though I guess. Another thing I could probably nitpick about is that it's obviously trying to look like a game, but they only show parts of the actual GUI needed. (showing dialogue boxes for selecting actions, but no GUI for selecting where to move your characters for example)
