EDF! EDF!

Recommended Posts

I've been playing a lot of EDF 2025 lately. BTW, it's an absolutely fantastic game anyone who truly loves videogames will adore. Anyway, I've always thought the names for the giant robots was kind of odd. Why are the "Hectors?" I just chalked it up as one of the many oddball things that contribute to the overall grade B atmosphere and didn't give it much further thought.

One of the grade B movies which made an impression on me when I was younger was Saturn 3. Kirk Douglas and Farrah Fawcett have to contend with a murderous robot in this 1980 movie. The robot scared the holy hell out of me when I was younger. But that's all that's stuck with me over the years. I don't remember many details about the story. I just remembered the robot was scary.

Today I discovered that Saturn 3 has been released on Blu Ray. I may have to snap it up and revisit this dim memory. But I also rediscovered the name of the robot. It's name is "Hector."

One of the odd things about Hector was how its head was on a stalk that might lay down or perk up at times, much like the heads of the Hectors in EDF can fold into the robot bodies or stand up higher. Also Hector moved with extreme methodicalness. It's movements were usually slow and deliberate, much like the Hectors in EDF. Also, Hector's legs were odd at the time, being sinewy looking instead of the simple plate look common at the time, and EDF Hectors' legs are notable for being an odd flexible disc design.

So, I wonder, are the Hectors in EDF an homage to the bot in Saturn 3? There are some interesting parallels there.

And on a similar note, the Deroys scare me to death every time I have to fight them. I never understood how truly terrifying the original War of the Worlds tripods were until I fought them in EDF. I get nervous every time those unnatural things undulate out upon the battlefield.

I haven't played this yet, but love the EDF series for sure.

I know of the flick Saturn 3, but you know, I don't think I've ever sen it. The robot in it was pretty scary looking for the pics I've seen. I need to check it out.
