Astrosmash glitch

Recommended Posts

So I was calibrating the color on my old '68 and '76 TV's to match the color on my HDTV (got pretty close), and tried to get it to match the Intellivision color (lost cause, old TVs just won't do comptuer-generated graphics properly. Even on normal TV channels when too much CGI or overlay crap is on the screen it distorts the picture and the color). and popped in Astrosmash just to test things out.

Not sure how it happened, but I recorded a glitch I've never seen before. Maybe mildly entertaining, I wasn't able to reproduce it. You can see me dying on purpose to see if anything else would happen after I died.

Anyone seen this before? What are scome cool glitches you've seen? Enjoy!

I have a pretty good idea of the nature of the glitch, but not the exact details obviously.

There's a GRAM loader routine that happens before the title screen comes up. It processes a small table of descriptors. If it reads corrupted data from this table, it'll initialize the GRAM incorrectly. I was able to get similar (but not identical) graphics to what you showed above by poking different values into this table.

EDIT: Attached some screen shots from my experiments.
