+Ksarul Posted December 12, 2014 Share Posted December 12, 2014 On PEBs and power, I have the necessary data to do a 3- or 4-slot mini-PEB based on one that the Hunter Valley User Group did. The board is pretty straightforward and already has the flex-cable logic on it, so it would be another way to get expansion possibilities in user hands. I haven't looked at what they were using as a power supply yet (or the little board they put on the TI end of the expansion cable). It uses standard PEB cards too. On cards that send audio to the console, there are several: The CorComp Triple Tech, The Berlin Speech Card (from Winfried Winkler, about 20 of these were made), the SNUG SPVMC, The Rave Speech Adapter, Marc's SID Master, the TI FORTI card, and the TI Video Controller. Greg's Speech Adapter will soon be on that list as well. I have all of these boards except for the Video Controller and the Triple Tech. First, because a bolt-on side-car expansion is likely not going to emulate every possible card a user could want or have. Secondly, because it's there. The speech cards should be handled by something like AMR (though even MP3 looks doable,) but anything which generates "real" sound will need better than a codec designed for speech (AMR only codes up to the 3400Hz area, IIRC.) It has the utility of rotating the foot for the regular PEB cable 90 degrees to make that a little less of a hassle. The second connection is still to the side, but it should be OK for folks wanting to put something else there. It was a way-station to the finger-board with 44-pin connector layout, so I'll be able to finish that one really quickly too. . .which would make this board work well as an extender and/or a splitter. It is basically a rectangular PCB with one set of connector fingers towards the back of the console, a connector that mates with the 44-pin console connector fingers, and another set of connector fingers that is on the far right side of the rectangle (opposite the TI connector). And Atrax, it does indeed replace the "Y" cable. Best post I've seen all week! I'm a bit paranoid about supplying the all the card data they require though, especially after all the hacking and identity theft I've read about lately. The problem as noted by a few others, however, is that the protocol will not only push, but could even exceed, the limits of gigabit. RXB Posted June 28, 2015 Share Posted June 28, 2015 (edited) Many years ago someone showed me at the West Fest a project of a SCSI cable with Snap on ends like a RS232 Printer clips. He had a modified Interface Cable Card and the end was a Speech Synthisizer that plugged in to the TI. (Cable could be removed at both ends.) It had a bunch of switches on it too. Did anyone ever take their conceptual ideas further? There were some interesting ideas, some of them foreshadowing today's expansion options. A lot of discussion was generated by my innocent little post. Fast forward to today, with more options on the table to make our imaginations a reality, is this worth revisiting? Meanwhile, my ol' low-buck original still works as good as when new some 30-odd years ago. Unfortunately, they used KEL-AM connectors on those cables, and they reverse the positions of the even and odd pins when compared to a standard connector. +Ksarul Posted October 5, 2020 Share Posted October 5, 2020 Understood--I was more giving a tip to anyone who finds one of the male connectors somewhere and tries to combine it with a standard 44-pin female connector on the other end of the cable. KEL-AM works great if it is on both ends of the cable, but things go wrong quickly if you mix them with other brands of connectors. I have a couple of these cables connected to my systems as well. They work great. Actual length of elephant foot is actually closer to 7.5" I order the most expensive cable, http://www.connectworld.net/cgi-bin/cabled/L1172, because if photo's are to be believed, I think the built in gold fingers of the male side would be better than the little PCB arrangement. So that I don't blow things up, I'm guessing the way to do this would be to orient the elephant foot as if to plug in to the console, then slip the cable making sure the one stripe or the other stays pointing forward (since the cable is not keyed in anyway) - then I'd mark both ends with a sharpie, that says top? +Ksarul Posted July 2, 2021 Share Posted July 2, 2021 Fair warning, the picture may have the KEL-AM connectors, but they last time I tried to buy some of the connectors from them, they were all out with none of their distributors having any remainders in stock either. These KEL-AM connectors aren't manufactured anymore, so whatever is still in the channel is all there is. Unless someone happens to have an unknown stash of them somewhere, the chances of turning up more of them is very low (and I've tried to source more of them for more than ten years now, without luck). New cables from that source have two female 44-pin connectors and a set of finger boards inserted into one of them to make the cable.
