Atari 8-bit Hardware Prices?

Recommended Posts

I don't think they were "taken" - did you look at how clean the box is?

Yes it looks clean. But at that price, they got taken. Unless there was a shift in the universe and 810's boxed have gone from $100-125 to that :)

But didn't somebody just pay something like $400-500 for a boxed 800. Maybe the same person....

I agree; $300 shipped is NOT REPRESENTATIVE of what a boxed 810 is worth, although that looks like a damn nice one, and indeed the box looks great! They don't have detailed pictures of all of the sides of the box, however. Note that the seller started bidding for $9.99 though, and that nothing they sold was tested or guaranteed to work.

I bought a boxed 800XL years ago that looked like new on the front of the box, but one of the edges of the box was all rotted out and torn up, and the ad did not show that.

However, not to criticize the purchaser. Stuff is worth (to you) whatever you are willing to pay. I was watching some items from that seller, and I note that although we can't tell the actual username of the purchaser(at least not until they leave feedback for the seller), we can tell (by the feedback count of the purchaser) that the same person went "Atari Crazy" and bought 3 drives from that seller - this 810, a boxed SF314, and a boxed XF551. If everything works, the other 2 weren't such a bad deal, and the XF551 (if it works) is a particularly good deal since NICE boxed (with both the drive being mint and working, and the box being mint) XF551 is a little bit rare, or at least uncommon.

I've made very similar purchases:

The box had some wear and crumpling (but was intact) when I bought this sealed NOS 810 from 4Jays in late 2012. It's a lot for an 810, but not $300! It really was NOS.

This SF314 - and the box - was absolutely, positively like new and guaranteed (or declared) to work, which it did.

This XF551 and the box are mint, but I paid quite a premium for it, even with the "best offer" being accepted. (I think this seller is an AtariAge member, but I can't remember who it is.) It was also guaranteed (or declared) to work, which it does.

If that XF551 works, that buyer who paid a ton for the 810 got a deal on the XF551.

I was looking at several of his items, even talked to him about pick up. Unfortunately, the stuff was too nice and went pretty high. $162 for the boxed Atari 800, $102 for the boxed XF551, and his Mega ST 4 was at $390 last I looked. The boxed 130xe went for $77.54.

It could be that the buyer of the 810 is getting back into the A8 scene after a long hiatus and is bidding an amount near to what he remembers their original value?

Back in 2010 when I started getting back into it, I was naive about current pricing and paid $100 for an 830 modem :)

Edit: I've also noticed he's bidding on a bunch of other Atari stuff...

God I wish I lived in the US, so much stuff for sale and so cheap compared to the UK.

When I start selling my stuff I will ship overseas. :)

I did not see that he had a Mega 4. A nice boxed one of those is very rare, but that is a bit of money for it.

The XF551 - if it works - really wasn't "expensive," relative to what boxed XF551s go for. They never go for less than $100, and sometimes considerably more. Here's a few over the past few years.... (I'm not sure if I always believe "new in box" claims when "mint in box" is many times more appropriate.)
