I can't vote because the game dictates the controls.

I am right handed, so my rhythm (accuracy) is in my right hand.

If a game demands precision firing, then I want the fire button for my right hand. (Galaga, Defender, Joust)

If a game demands precision joystick movements, I want the joystick in my right hand. (Pac Man, Dig Dug)

This is my 7800 joystick. (Thanks the.golden.ax!)

I would vote, but I ban the joystick as much as possible. The jerks who decided that racing, platform, RPG and all over kinds of games should be played with a Joystick (especially the horrible flimsy joysticks made during all the 80's should be burned alive.

Thanks Amstrad for THIS :

It came late, but it existed.

Just depends on how the controller is configured. I can use either hand (I'm semi - ambidextrous.)

Atari Joystick - Left hand firing, right hand controlling.

NES or Xbox Pad - Left hand controlling, right hand pressing buttons.

Keyboard - Left hand for UDLR, right hand moving mouse and firing.

Right hand for Atari joysticks and left hand for gamepads since there's no choice there really...

I was thinking about this when designing my own MAME cabinet, for older arcade games that have fire buttons on both sides I use my right hand on the joystick cause that's how I learned as a kid.

Over the years I discovered I do some things better left, like bowling, fishing, skateboarding and I prefer a left handed or ambi trackball. I write, throw and wipe by backside with my right, so I'm claiming righty. As far as joysticks I've always used them righty because most are set up that way. However my favorite game is Smash TV which is two joysticks? I've always hated joysticks for consoles in favor of pads mostly for comfort. I gonna try to use them lefty sometime.
