A* hole co-workers made me feel old

Recommended Posts

Today we loaded up the "lunch bus" and went to ci-ci's pizza (yea its crap but its all you can eat crap for 5 bucks), the more senior people were unable to make it, now keep in mind, besides the boss the eldest of the more senior people is 37, but I was free so I said what the hell, I will go with the ulterior motive of hitting the retro game store next door with a free ride hehe.

So I am sitting there binging on cheap pizza with 2 recent graduates and two interns (a freshmen and a jr in college), once things start winding down I sneak over to the game store, grab demon attack and enduro for 2600. I pop back in and they ask how old those games were... well 82 and 83 is whats on the labels, thats when I hear, "you are the only one at the table that was alive when those games were made"

sigh I was in grade school when those games were made, darn kids!

I remember working with a 17 year old girl who didn't understand what the computer meant when it said "Hit Return". I had to explain that "Return" was the same as "Enter", and that it was a holdover from these ancient machines called "typewriters". And at the time, I was humoring myself into thinking I wasn't THAT much older than her... :-/

I was born in 1990 and I play plenty of systems that were released before then.

In fact, I basically inherited a lot of systems from my parents and brothers as they stopped playing them. That's how I got my 2600, NES, Game Boy, Genesis, and Game Gear. The first system I got that was actually purchased for me was my SEGA Saturn (my all time favorite).

And they probably only know Don Rickles as the guy who did a voice in Toy Story. Thanks to old reruns, Johnny Carson, and the library, I knew about all kinds of stuff that was "before my time."

Hi guys,

I went to popular stores like Caldor, Bradlees, Alexander's, J.J. Newberry's, Lional Kiddie City, and Stern's in the Northeast. Today's kids and young teens never heard of them. Too bad, now I feel old for mentioning them! :-D

I've purchased new Atari games from places like Children's Palace, Gold Circle, Harts, Hills, and 3-D in the midwest. They've all been gone for years and my kids have never heard of them!

I had a teenage cashier working for me for a couple months this year and she was asking me about my wrist splint (I've got nerve damage from diabetes so I wear a splint at work to keep my hand from swelling or doing other unpleasant things). Once I explained to her what it was for she said, "I hope I don't have problems like that when I'm old!"

I'm only 28! 28 damn you teenagers! Get off my lawn!

I'm feeling old this year.

At only 29, I thought I was still young. Yet so far this year I've had people tell me the PS2 and Gamecube were "retro". Stating they were their first consoles. Sigh.

As someone who started with an NES when I was young, my idea of "retro" GREATLY differs. Heck, nearly every console with a CD drive in my eyes can't possibly be retro. It's been something I've been noticing recently. I guess I've finally crossed that threshold where I'm not in the young group of gamers anymore.

It does help me sometimes, though. I got a Jaguar once for a few bucks simply because the store owner thought it was broken...didn't have a cart in the tray. But most of the time it's a kick in the gut. When someone laughs at an original Gameboy wondering how anyone could play a game on it (when I remember clearly playing it in the car and on the bus without issue when I was a kid), doesn't understand what a memory card is or that it's needed (seriously, HDDs have spoiled newer gamers), or doesn't know how to play a system with just a dpad or only one joystick, it really just irritates me to no end haha.

I've been feeling pretty old these days myself, now that I'm 38.

I just have to keep in mind that to many young people their first gaming system was a Playstation or something else around that time period. I have the most attachment to a NES/SNES cause I grew up on those. But to people a few years older, it's the Colecovision or the Intelivsion or 2600.

I have a pretty generous definition of what I consider retro also, for that reason -- to me, the PS1 and Saturn and N64 and even the Dreamcast is all retro now, and soon it will include the PS2 and original Xbox and Gamecube.

Consider someone like Jennifer Lawrence (She comes to mind cause I'm seeing the new X-Men movie tomorrow). She was born in 1990. Chances are her first gaming system was a Playstation or N64 when she was about 7-8. THAT should make you feel old.

At 54, I'm older than some here, but I'm glad to have had opportunities that many younger folks missed out on:

  • Got to ride many Yesterland attractions at Disneyland, including the Flying Saucers, Adventure Thru Inner Space, the Rocket Jets, People Mover, and the Skyway between Tomorrowland and Fantasyland
  • Witnessed the first human beings to set foot on the Moon on live television
  • Witnessed the last human beings to set foot on the Moon on live television
  • Played the first arcade videogames on real hardware (Computer Space, Pong, Space Race, etc.) when they were new
  • Witnessed the birth of the integrated circuit, microprocessor, and the first microcomputers
  • Got to open the box of a brand new original heavy sixer Atari VCS on Christmas morning 1977
  • Got to see 2001: A Space Odyssey on the big screen
  • Got to see Star Wars Episode IV "A New Hope" on the big screen (...before it was known as Episode IV - when it was just "Star Wars")
  • Other epic movies include: Jaws, West World, Logan's Run, Alien, all of the Star Trek movies, Planet of the Apes, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, ET, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Ghost Busters
  • Learned how to type on a mechanical typewriter so I understand why the keys are arranged the way they are
  • Saw the return of Halley's Comet when I was old enough to remember it
  • Observed FM radio replace AM for music broadcasting
  • Observed Color television replace Black & White programming
  • Saw transistors and printed circuit board electronics replace vacuum tubes and point-to-point wiring in most consumer electronics
  • Listened to Beatles songs on the radio when they were new, and the Beatles were still together
  • Played with Hot Wheels cars when they were first introduced

The nice thing is that with modern technology, I can virtually time-travel and relive a lot of those memories. I can emulate many of those classic arcade videogames, classic computers and game systems. I can re-visit the classic TV shows I grew up with. For example, I watched the pilot of "My Favorite Martian" on Hulu this weekend. I've watched the entire first season of Star Trek TOS on Netflix in the order that each episode was originally aired.

In short, I feel like I grew up in an exciting and hopeful time, and I see little advantage in being younger and part of a jaded, cynical, hopeless generation who can look forward to being part of the 99% servant class catering to the wealthy 1%, fighting for scraps in a permanent trickle-down economy...

Hi guys,

Well, don't feel old. This will make you laugh and feel good about yourself..

I remember seeing the comedian George Burns on the Tonight show on the occasion of his 94th birthday.

Johnny Carson was the host, and he asked the question;

"George, you chain smoke cigars all day, you drink bourbon on the rocks, and you are often seen in the company of much younger women. What do your doctors say about maintaining that type of lifestyle, especially at your age?"

Burns took a puff on his cigar, and thought about it for a moment, and replied;

"My doctors are all dead."

Some good stuff you mentioned, there. LOTS of 40-ish/40-something people here from the 80s/Atari generation who shared in many of those things you mentioned; a great multitude here are close in age.

Sometimes I do wish I had been born ten year earlier. Got a lot of love for 80s culture. Probably from my brother and sister, who are 15 and 12 years older than me respectively.

Then again, my brother is 44. Screw that lol
