The most annoying enemies in classic games

Recommended Posts

Not enemies, but at times very annoying: The NPC's in RPG's like Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior for NES. Sometimes they just block your way mindlessly and you want to yell, "MOVE IT!"

I hated the boss Mandara in Shinobi. Either you're too slow or you'll have hardly any life afterwards when the boss head starts scrolling up and down on the right.

Easy! Go right up to the statues and use magic. You'll get parked in the middle of the statues; now hold right till you emerge in front of the head. He can't even shoot for a long while.. waste him with your shurikens!

The bats from the beginning of stage 7 in "Rondo of Blood" are bats straight out of video game hell. They take two hits with the whip and you have to keep pressing on as the ground crumbles beneath your feet. They only take one hit with the axe, but they're usually too low to hit them. Sometimes I have no trouble getting past them, most other times I lose a bunch of health or die. There's a huge amount of luck involved. The rest of the stage isn't that bad except for the boss fight.

Falling Stalactites in Double Dragon (NES)

Dramite ships in Parsec (the later levels)

UFOs in Asteroids

The hive bees in the last stage of Faxanadu

Hatehatehate all these, passionately...

I hate Hammer Bros. also. They don't need to have hammers in order to kill Mario. Just the simple random jumping will do. Geez, I guess they want to make sure they can kill Mario.

The first one and in the Lost Levels, they are the worst. Especially the first one in world 5-2 and towards the end in 8-4 the lone one standing where you have to perfectly stomp on without any pixel of a hammer touching you, or a mad dash as they jump. In later stages they can skip a level of bricks. And when you are powered up and have to hit the brick they are standing on with perfection or they will fall on you if you miss them. Lost Levels they charge towards you, but the solution is to stay far left on the screen and wait til they approach to stomp them. The hammers won't harm you. Mario 3 and Mario World they were no problem.

The pods from defender. When you shoot them, they split into several really annoying "swarmers" that are really tough to destroy and shoot back at you!

Almost every enemy in Crystal Quest. Each of them are annoying in different ways!

Those stupid flying enemies in MAGICIAN LORD that fire bullets at you. Hard to take those guys out, and hard to avoid their bullets. And it's total b.s. that you can't shoot while climbing a ladder.

The green samarai in Bruce Lee. Espicially because your friend could pick up the joystick at anytime and take control just to make it more annoying.

Those trees from Crystal Castles really annoy me.

Those Quarks from Robotron always lost a life due to them before.

The fish from Jumpbug.

The opposing car from Dodge'em. Seriously, how could you NOT hate that thing?

Not quite as irritating as the bats in Mountain King; When they steal the crown, you have to start all over

This. A thousand times this. Hate those bastards. They were the first thing I thought of, but on further review, I also have PTSD from playing Towering Inferno and having one flame that wants to hide forever in a wall, but decides to jump out and kill your ass if you dare to pass by. Flames are dicks.

OMG! The "you are about to drown" music is sooooo stressful! I think it actually makes me panic and I am more likely to die than if it did not alert me.

It's the same way in Super Mario when you hear that "time's almost up" warning and then the music plays much faster. Same goes for Tetris.

I just remembered a new candidate over the weekend as I was playing through Quake on the PC.

This guy may not look like much, but imagine a bouncing piece of jelly that flies across the screen at lightning speed, takes more than one shot to kill, and explodes in your face at about the same power as a rocket or grenade. Extremely frustrating and my new vote for the most annoying enemy ever. Or at least high up there on that list.

ST. GERMAIN from Castlevania: Curse of Darkness.

God, this guy is so cheap.. he constantly attacks and then disappears, making it difficult to hit him. Then he keeps disappearing and reappearing at the top of the clock tower and says "NOW TIME ADVANCE!" and hits you with poison, that spinning clock arm that continuously damages you and sends some spiky dragon thing to hit you. When you finally beat him.. HE REGAINS ALL HIS ENERGY! "NOW TIME REVERSE!" All his energy returns, then he starts shooting at you with his pistol. Unbelievably cheap M.F.!

God, just about ANY enemy from Tiger Road. This game is about as frustrating as JAIL BREAK. Even the first boss is an elusive son of a bitch that likes to change up his movement pattern just to annoy you!

For me, the most annoying enemy are Wosus from Zelda II, I love the game but grinding for experience is so difficult with these enemies appearing every two seconds in palaces getting rid of all of my experience without being able to reclaim any once I have defeated them. And to add more pain, they didn't even steal experience in the original Japanese version! I am not good at that game.

I think for me the most annoying enemies at times were just the ones that would reappear if you backed up the screen one solitary pixel so you'd have to do it all over again. That seemed entirely unnecessary.
