Did id Bypass the Jaguar CD?

Recommended Posts

I notice that when I play Doom or Wolf3D with the JagCD attached but not plugged in, the game works anyway. With any other game with the JagCD unpowered, I get the "Plug in CD" graphic.

What gives? I wonder why/how it was done this way? :ponder:

Wow, that's weird. I would have never thought to have tried that, but now I'm going to.... You got me as to why....

Could the difference be in the CD player? "Val D'Isere" and "NBA: TE" both work in my CD player with the power supply unplugged.

The VLM graphics engage, flow for a few seconds, and then the cart automatically boots.

If you put a CD in the drive (with power applied) with these carts installed, does it boot the cart or the CD?

Do other games boot the same way?

Yes. I tried a number of different combinations yesterday with my two CD drives and both "Baldies" (and different carts) and "Battlemorph" (with different carts). I dropped one of my CD players on the floor a few weeks ago; that one will no longer (sadly) play CDs with any regularity, but it boots up with what looks like a rainbow variation of the "Saturn" screens from T2K and then automatically loads the cart.

My other (working) one boots up with the standard VLM graphics (e.g. fractalish) and automatically boots the cart.

The only time I've received the familiar "?" prompt is when I've attempted to play a Jag CD unplugged with no cartridge.

Perhaps the difference is with the Jag unit itself?

My system does that sometimes too with cartridges in the Cd player. It seems the old Jaggie just gets confused at times.
