Homebrew Programmers: What is your "Real job" ?

Recommended Posts

I used to be a greeter at a restaurant. Currently I am unemployed.

Programming the 6507 in the Atari 2600 is a challenge, an enjoyable diversion and gives me something productive to do until I find another job.

The popularity of the console, tight programming environment, small memory map and the challenge of "racing the beam" attracted me to the 2600. Nothing else quite like it. Plus I have always enjoyed programming in 6502 assembly.

I am a software developer for a CCTV company we tend to do work for very large sites with many thousands of cameras and a lot of specialist security equipment to monitor. Im 27, a lot of my friends at work who write home-brew games for the BBC micro for example think I am relatively young to be into this kind of thing.

The reason I love the 2600 so much is because I was given one for christmas when my parents had no money so my mums brother gave me his sons Atari as he was getting a mega drive or something like that.

I fell in love with gaming because of this console and always asked my dad from an early age if he could explain to me how these games worked!

At work I do a lot of Java, C++, C# and god knows what else but I have never done proper assembly programming until now. I love that you must know so much detail about the hardware and how it works, now days we are abstracted from that a lot and I think going back to something like this improves your overall programming ability.

Interesting question. I know 8-bit guys around here are from various places but most of them are programmers, artists, musicians and some of them are from customer support or testers.

For myself, I'm working as a programmer at ZEN Studios. And I'm programming for fun 24/7 so I can't imagine how people not doing it for a hobby too. :)
