Awesome Purchases....Turned Not Awesome

Recommended Posts

So today I got a "score". I picked up a boxed Generation NEX nes clone for 50 bucks. I also got CIB with original shrinkwrap copies of Roadblasters and Super C. My two favorite games on the NES by far.

I figured... AWESOME. I haven't had an NES in years, largely due to the 72 pin connector thingies always going out, and the top loader looking ugly as all sin (sorry, I just can't stand the look of it). I figured getting something that looked like the original NES but with newer components would be great. Plus the store "tests all products". I drove a total of 1 hour out of my way for all three products... was SO excited.

Apparently, they didn't test this...

I get sound, black screen. I can even play the game! I hear all the gameplay, controls respond to every move (based on audio cues, I can tell)... but no video. No static, no change in color of the screen, nothing. The games are compatible. I've checked their compatibility list on their archived site. Both should work, no issues.

So now I'm in a sticky situation. I can return the system... and I will...but now I'm stuck with two of my favorite games and no console. I hate the toaster's reliability, and I hate the top loader's high price tag and looks.

I'm thinking of returning the games as well, but I've never had these games in such pristine condition, none the less complete. Heck, they even have the NES sleeves inside with the styrofoam on the bottom. I'd hate to just return them to see them disappear to another collector, but I have no system to play them on so what good are they to me?

I hate situations like this. I guess the system could have broken after they tested it somehow, but I doubt it. Now I don't know what the heck to do. Any advice? Has this happened to you before?

Hi guys,

My Xbox 360. When I first purchased it in 2005 and felt great. But after it suffered from the RRoD! I was devastated. To this very day, I had to replace 6, 360 consoles and send them back Microsoft under the warranty! :(

I just purchase another one on Ebay from a seller that modded it with better internal fan cooling, but it doesn't affect the system for me to play on Xbox Live! Here is their link if anybody wants to see it in which I purchased one from this auction!

Note: The seller also offers credit back to your account if you send your old unit if the Microsoft seal wasn't removed to be fixed! He has other systems for sale as well

Wow! I still have the first Xbox 360 I got in 2009. Don't know if it's just because it's a Jasper or because I have it sitting on an upside-down wire basket that is coated with white stuff, similar to this kind of thing:

Update:

My Xbox 360 is also pretty darn quiet.

OP: just keep the games and get a different system later. When I was starting out collecting years and years ago, I passed on all kinds of games I didn't have systems for, thinking the same thing: "what's the point if I can't use them?" And that wasn't even stuff that was nostalgically important. But it was stuff I'd have to pay a little bit for years later, like VIC-20 and Aquarius games.

Ah, the GeneratioNEX. I remember being pretty excited about that thing since it was like a proper "new" Nintendo. I got a new one for free at the tail end of its "lifetime," and fired it up once. I haven't used it enough to formulate an honest opinion of it, but I know NOCs and emulation have come a long way since then, and it has a lot of the same compatibility issues the earlier Yobo systems and the like had. It does feel a little cheap, too. And I've got like four real NESs anyway, so the GenNEX is purely a collector piece for me.

Wow, shit luck on the Xbox360. I have one late-non-HDMI model, bough in a car boot sale 2 years ago for 60€, and so far it run fine (except for the goddam taking off plane noise level  )

Get a toaster and change the pin connector.

Get a toaster and clean the pin connector with Barkeep's Friend.

Get a toaster, open it, clean the connector with crystal/white vinegar (bath it during some minutes and rub/clean it with some cloth) and maybe bend the connectors a bit if they are looking too bent .

I did it for both NESes I got, 4 years ago, and up to now, it's still going fine, with the original Nintendo connector.

You only need ONE screwdriver for doing this.

I'll have to try this…I have a couple of finicky toasters that give me trouble. Maybe if I can get them all "up to snuff", I can sell one to DaytonaUSA for cheap! :)

I thought i made an awesome buy when i got hold of a whole box of 40 Atari 2600-games for about equivalent 3 - 5$ a piece.

Turns out that 22 of them are NTSC games and i live deep in the land of PAL. Sadly, those were most of the good games.

That turned out to be a very much non-awesome buy in the end.

RetroUSB will be offering a better NOAC system with HDMI and near 100 percent compatability. That's probably the way to go. The top loader is missing the AV out so adding to the high price will be the need to get it modded. That's really the way to go however if you want original hardware.

Are Nintoasters available? The hybrid models that use a toaster with a different 72pin connector so it just pushes in? I've seen them but not lately and they were crazy expensive.

Good news is he gave my money back. Although he forced me to return the boxed roadblasters and super c. Which pissed me off. They had a no money back policy. Glad he 'reversed the policy' that once.
