Storing carts with no top label

Recommended Posts

I love the N64. Its my favorite Nintendo system. I remember when it came out and was floored when I saw it.

But as much as I love it I hate its carts. N64 isn't alone. Several systems including the Sega Master System and Jaguar didn't have top labels either.

I REFUSE to write on the tops of my carts. Some gaming shops did this and I refused to shop there no matter what they had.

But I leaves the question. How do I display/store these? I'm trying to figure out a way to see the label while having them stored in a smallish space but I'm not doing well.

I have nearly fifty n64 games. And its hard having them in a bin, thumbing through them all trying to find the right game.

Any suggestions?

Nintendo made custom cases that held the cart, manual, and memory card. The link below show the case and this site has 1 for sale. Originally these came 3 to a box. They are nice as the manual gets displayed through one side of the box and I used VHS tape labels for the spine of the case to label them.

I've seen those. Although I always thought they were third party. Either way , at five a case I'd be out 250 dollars. There's got to be a cheaper way.

Thanks though! Keep the ideas coming!

Actually my boxes look slightly different. They fit nicely in a photo box. You can see the slot for a memory card in the picture with the open box.

Heh you could probably even make something like a custom dust sleeve out of cardstock paper and scotch tape where the games slide in sideways and label the top of that. It would be cheaper than any other possible solution

I've actually used one of those little Dyno-style labelers, that spit out a nice printed piece of vinyl label. It looks decent, and can be peeled right back off later.

That's a good idea actually. I wonder if those things are affordable. I'll have to look that up

Store your cart in alphabetic order... I never got this end label issue... In fact when I was a kid, I always wondered what the use of them was (on the NES, never had a VCS).

Because all my games were stored vertically on a shelf... So a SIDE label would have been more useful. And most of the games I owned myself had still their boxes so it was even less of an issue.

What I do now is storing them at an angle, like this ///////// so I can see part of the sticker or flip through them rather than pulling them from the shelf.

I believe I bought mine new for $30. As noted, you can also find them at thrift stores if you look around a bit.

If you get one, do go ahead and buy a two pack of replacement tape. Like inkjets, the starter cartridge is "shorted" compared to the refills, and you'll quickly find yourself using it for labeling stuff outside the game room as well. I labeled my electronics components drawers, and even stuff in the kitchen now has little white labels with neat black print on them.

I have a label maker that I had forgotten about. You can still get one brand new from Toys R Us for $13 that functions well for basic label printing. The more expensive models offer features that you will likely not use. Search for "label maker".
