Atari 800 - Best Game Pack : Releases

I myself always update the Altirra used in the gamepack for when I have a blast...

Can't say I've noticed the stagger ever but make sure the Vertical Sync option in view (edit: in Altirra) is ticked..

I've not had a single issue over the years with updating Altirra in the gamepack as the only options that get changed internally that matter to the gamepack for the updates are the command line switches that we used to make sure the games got the right settings and Phaeron has not changed those..

To be honest the only thing you can expect from using a newer Altirra with the gamepack is an improvement in gaming quality where Phaeron had updated it.

As a person who has tested the games hundreds of times in Altirra and the version that was initially used in the Gamepack I can promise there no issue with updating it in the emul\altirra\ directory to the latest one, its what's in mine and its perfectly good..

Since its not like there are all sorts of new games being released for the Ataris, is there any reason to think this utility should be resurrected ? Im guessing its pretty complete after all the effort you guys put into it, so Im not clear on what new features a resurrection could offer.

I've not heard from Starwindz in a long time, he's an incredibly busy technical engineering team leader in a specialist field and his job was upped a notch when we last spoke, with his work related jaunts all over the place from his home in South Korea it really does not leave a lot of time for him to do this stuff these days. He's a great guy and he's what I class as my long lost South Korean brother, we share the exact same tastes in almost every thing and he's just a lovely guy to get on with BUT work and life take the lead. SO the idea of him resurrecting the interface and the DB coding engine are rather unlikely, my part could be done by anyone as its testing archives and was helping Starwindz with the ins and outs of Altirra mostly, Avery kindly added command lines for the odd thing to help us and other front end makers.

The only update that could be done is new games added but the theme of the project is "The Best of" so adding every new release may be not in keeping as they have not had time to become the classics already added but saying that there are a load of new games that are must add ones but it needs an understanding of the Gamebase DB system to add them and the pairs system it uses. Me, I'm up to my neck in doing things, looking after my old friend and my mother in law who both have dementia and taking them shopping and to appointments along with my own medical problems and keeping my daughter Serena safe from the continued recovery from Anorexia dn the mental issues surround it mean I don't get much time and when I'm not doing all that I'm recovering from doing it all :)

Could the front end be spruced up, I don't really think so, the subject was wide open to all AA readers to make suggestions of which most were added at the time, it offers a nice visual and audible reference with internet search links embedded, add Altirra and the ability to send to Aspect so a real machine could play the games and not just an emulator and I think its nigh on perfect..

But I'm biased :)

The database is from James Burrows and its called Gamebase, http://www.bu22.com/

Its pretty much a standard these days for emulator collections bar a few new more glitzy ones..

Starwindz has the source so I don't know if he hacked, re-coded or whatever to add the extra's from our database..

Any source is with him and he's almost impossible to get hold of these days...Really busy man..I use his contact from here from time to time and these days I don't get a reply.

I don't think I had any other way to contact him bar that..

But as for me doing the updating, I doubt it, I'm looking after two dementia ravaged people, my daughter and my wife whose health is a bit shaky at the mo...And that's without my probs..

To be perfectly honest, I'm knackered these days, the pain is such a put off, I'd rather use the time to play now :)

If I can..

You have to manually get the update from the site, there's a link below the main one...Not sure of the error...That's Starwindz side but the update function on our Gamepack stopped after a while as it was easier to provide a link and get it that way..

Hi there, best to ask in the other forum, Starwindz the programmer has long since left the project and I have to say I've not seen that error myself. All I can say is that the pack does work and I use it a lot for fun as I had something to do with it.

Try to give a few details, what OS, is it being ran on a virtual machine etc etc..

First and foremost, as someone that has been working on a neat and tidy RetroPie build for eight months, this Atari 800 pack is exquisitely designed and maintained. Thanks to all involved for this accomplishment.

I figured I'd take a shot in the dark here, but is there anyway possible to take what is given to me in this package and output it into an Emulationstation playlist? I'd really like to scrape all of this artwork somehow utilizing the connections this software has made to all of the covers and screenshots.

Thanks for your time and help.

As with the previous question asked above yours, I suggest you ask in the main 8 bit computer forum. Sadly Starwindz who did all the creating and coding of the database is hard at work in South Korea where he's a very busy guy. I only did all the Atari related tech stuff ie settings command line switches etc etc.

My coding knowledge isn't good enough for script generators, I have no doubt its possible but above my pay grade. Ask in the main forum ass there's some terrific coders in there..

Sorry I can't help but I'm happy you enjoyed the work in the gamepack..

This is a great start, Mclane, so thank you.

I've been trying to put together a massive RetroPie build over the course of the year but the Atari 800 has always been an outlier in terms of scraping quality. It's such a mixed bag, so to stumble upon this masterwork was really amazing and I look forward to finding a way to carry it forward with me.

I'll try over in the main forum. Keep on kicking ass!
