Rambo upgrade and cheap Sega controllers

I bought some cheap 6 button Sega controllers off of eBay ($7 a pair) just to have some extra controllers.

 

The weird thing is they stop working on my Rambo 800xl. Unplugging and plugging them back in brings them back to life.

 

Could the memory upgrade mess them up? They work fine in my 600xl with 64K. I should test them on my 130xe and 800...

Sounds like a PIA issue, since the PIA controls both joystick input and RAM selection on a RAMBO.

Sega uses the Atari plugs, but the pins are used slightly different. Maybe that causes the problems?

It's interesting because I've never had a problem with real Sega controllers on this machine, 3 or 6 button.
