Noah98 #1 Posted July 5, 2014 (edited) I've compiled an alphabetical list of 150 of the greatest classic games of all time. I used the following criteria: 1. No Arcade Conversions (we already know how great those are!) 2. No Homebrews/Hacks 3. Cartridge Based Games Only 4. No Computers (I counted the Atari XEGS as a game console because that is how it was marketed + it operates without the keyboard.) 5. Only pre NES systems (Although I did include Atari 7800 games because they fit more with the classic style games) I also listed the system that had the best version of the game (some are tied). Best version was decided by graphics, gameplay, and sometimes controller. This is just a starter list (and obviously subjective), so feel free to suggest changes and argue away! 1. Advanced D&D: Cloudy Mountain (Intellivision) 2. Advanced D&D: Treasure of Tarmin (Intellivision) 3. Adventure (Atari 2600) 4. Adventures of Tron (Atari 2600) 5. Alien (Atari 2600) 6. +jeremiahjt #2 Posted July 5, 2014 (edited) Nice list. You have one of my favorites that usually gets left out, Video Olympics. Some of my favorites you omitted would be Warlords, 7800 Asteroids, and 7800 Centipede. You could get by with Asteroids and Centipede being arcade ports, but I believe Warlords was first developed for the 2600. Noah98 #3 Posted July 5, 2014 Nice list. The arcade version of Warlords was released in 1980, and the Atari 2600 version was released in 1981. I agree that Asteroids and Centipede are really good on the 7800, but I was trying to highlight all of the non arcade games that the classic systems had. These games were so creative and deserve the special recognition!
Noah98 #4 Posted July 5, 2014 As a quick note, I realize that the XEGS came out after the NES, but it is a classic style system. It had the same controller as the 2600, almost the same hardware as the 5200, and games that reflected the early systems (Pitfall, River Raid, Star Raiders, etc). high voltage #5 Posted July 5, 2014 If you have the XEGS, you could've include C64GS, as it uses carts too
Noah98 #6 Posted July 5, 2014 If you have the XEGS, you could've include C64GS, as it uses carts too I thought about it, but it was only released in Europe. Also, since it didn't have a compatible keyboard, many of the original cartridges for the C64 didn't work on it. The XEGS included buttons on the console to allow it to operate without the keyboard. cvga #7 Posted July 5, 2014 Fun list and great job. You have more than one system listed for a few games. Is that because you couldn't decide which version was best? I think of Demon Attack for the 2600 and Intellivision as two separate games because they are so different. On the other hand, games like River Raid and Pitfall were made for multiple systems but you only list them for the Colecovision amd Atari 2600 respectively. Did you consider the Microvision? I would have probably listed Block Buster and Bowling if it is eligible. Again, great job!

Demon Attack is tough because I love them both! If I only listed one system, I felt like that system had the better version. I left out handhelds so I didn't consider the Microvision. Cynicaster #10 Posted July 7, 2014 This is a decent list, for sure. The fact that Plaque Attack made it while Enduro did not is a bit problematic, though.
gliptitude #11 Posted July 7, 2014 Strange criteria but interesting list. .. I can only account for the Vectrex stuff and the bit of 2600 that i have experience with, and you got most of what i would choose. (Web Wars, Narzod, Yar's Revenge, Cosmic Ark..) I like Secret Quest and would have included it. Cosmic Chasm for Vectrex would also be a good candidate, (the Vectrex version actually predates the arcade one). .. Bedlam for me does not hold up so well and I think there are a couple others better. Nebula Commander is a homebrew btw.
Noah98 #12 Posted July 7, 2014 Great feedback! Forgot about Enduro and Secret Quest! I added: Enduro, Secret Quest, Commando Raid, and Jumpman Junior. BassGuitari #15 Posted July 8, 2014 I've compiled an alphabetical list of 150 of the greatest classic games of all time. I used the following criteria: 5. Only pre NES systems (Although I did include Atari 7800 games because they fit more with the classic style games) Good list, but it can't really be called "...of all time" when, excluding the 7800 and XEGS, it stops at 1985.

Noah98 #18 Posted July 9, 2014 After reading the feedback I decided to slightly change my criteria. I think I was not being fair to the hardware power of the Atari 7800. It really should be categorized with the SMS and NES. So, I've removed the 7800 games and added: Cosmic Chasm (Vectrex), Laser Gates (Atari 7600), Worm War I (Atari 2600), and Kool Aid Man (Atari 2600). 1. Advanced D&D: Cloudy Mountain (Intellivision) 2. Advanced D&D: Treasure of Tarmin (Intellivision) 3. Adventure (Atari 2600) 4. Adventures of Tron (Atari 2600) 5. Alien (Atari 2600) 6. Noah98 #19 Posted July 9, 2014 Good list, but it can't really be called "...of all time" when, excluding the 7800 and XEGS, it stops at 1985. I guess "all time" only applies to my initial criteria!
gliptitude #20 Posted July 11, 2014 I mainly only thought the criteria strange because it excluded arcade ports. .. It DOES make a lot of sense to me though to divide all of gaming into "before NES" and "after NES" because gaming was almost something completely different before and after this console, (in my opinion). .. I had suggested Secret Quest earlier but i just realized it actually came out in 1989. I think that that's 3 years after the first Zelda game!
