How Come my dad enjoyed the VCS originally but not now?

Recommended Posts

My dad bought a VCS in '84 and enjoyed it very much and had many games!! In '91 he bought me a Super Nintendo and the VCS dissapeared

But in '99 I bought a VCS but he never had an interest in playing with it..

Now in 2002 I bought a PS2 and he has gone mad crazy on Madden 2003 and never paid attention to the VCS...

Why? Didn't he enjoy my VCS as much as HIS VCS?

Opinions??

he was 23 when he bough his VCS now he is 42 can that be the root of the problem??

you might wanna reedit it again, its a little odd now, because his father used to enjoy it.. "How Come my dad enjoyed the VCS originally but not now?" might fit better, but then again i didnt see the line before you made the change so im not sure.

My guess is that he's older, since people change. And/or if he's good at video games, then he's bored of the old ones...he needs some new stuff now!

But the thing is that the guy instead of getting worse he gets better!! sometimes I get home and seeing him playing a Triple Play 2002 seson with 30 wins and 5 losses just baffels me!! and dont get me started on Madden and him...

To A2600: I personally don't think anyone can speak for why your dad doesn't like the VCS now, but seeing that he likes the PS2, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Most likely he's found the system that gives him the most enjoyment. I'm just currently trying out games here and there on my own PS2, both native games and those originally made for the PSX, but as far as games that give me instant enjoyment, I haven't come across any for the PS2 that are like those of the early 1980s arcade and home game machines -- unless you count the "greatest hits" game compilations. Bottom line: enjoy what you have and don't worry about your dad.

Let's be realistic - not everybody is a retro-gamer or feels nostalgia for the vintage systems. If there weren't people who wanted to "get that old s#%t out of the closet/attic/basement" there wouldn't be any games for us to buy on eBay, true? Turning people on to VCS who have no experience with it isn't easy, either. I remembered fiddling with them as a kid, playing Night Driver and Pac-Man here and there, and even I had doubts about re-discovering Atari. At one point I got so frustrated with 2600 I even posted to RGVC begging for advice on games that didn't stink. Thankfully I turned the corner when I found AtariAge. Between good advice and homebrew games I finally came to appreciate just what a marvelous console the VCS is. :D

Well, a lot of people that grew up with the VCS and have continually played games of all types for various systems, simply see the VCS as obsilete crap now. However, if they liked it then, then you should be able to peak their interest, at least for a little while, by pulling out games they didn't play.

By some homebrew and hacked games. He might actually take notice then, if not, no loss, you gained a few more great games.

I feel almost exactly opposite. I like newer systems (hell I like all video games) but I always go back to the VCS. I have to be in more of a mood to get involved in game that takes time to load, an hour to get almost nowhere, learn ridiculous button combinations and with a storyline thinner then some VCS games. I still haven't found a modern game as good as HERO. I doubt that I ever will.

We're preaching to the choir here .. but I do have one story:

Back in 1998 while on a road trip, I called a computer store in Houston, TX and asked if they had any Atari 8-bit stuff. The voice on the phone said, "No." I asked if they ever get Atari stuff in for trade. His response, "If I did, I would throw it away!" Grief!

Video games are about love! Some people prefer eye candy instead of gameplay. I remember an interview with Nolan Bushnell back in the 1970s where he said that the best games involved a kid picking up a controller making a few mistakes and then getting the idea of the game all within one minute. You cannot do that with most "modern" games.

He also called playing a game .. a basic low level of computer programming .. where moving a joystick or twisting a paddle is input and you see the result on the screen.

That's idiots here in Houston for ya. I'm having trouble lately finding 2600 games.

So what brought you here?

Cos he got old.

Who knows?

My dad isn't interested in games anymore..hasn't been for over 10 years.

Last game I remember him playing was something on the NES.

Also, as some people get older, their tastes in things change.
