What's your favorite mobile gaming device?

Recommended Posts

I don't do any mobile gaming at all. But I'd like to. What's your favorite (including any add-ons like gamepads), and why?

I don't do too much mobile gaming but my favorite is the iPad mini I got last month. Fast and very light.

I also have an older Tab2 and plan on trying a PS4 controller. I heard it works well.

As far as traditional "consoles" go I like the 3DS the best and then maybe the Vita or PSP (homebrewed PSP)

I still like the PSP, even though the hardware is getting a little long in the tooth. There are dozens of games I enjoy replaying every few years and hundreds more that I haven't gotten around to playing yet.

The Sony Xperia Play is my current "go to" emulation handheld. I've got emulators loaded on the PSP as well, but the Xperia Play does a better job of it.

Between the 2 I have access to almost the entire history of gaming sitting on the bedside table. Plug in headphones and they're perfect for when she wants to watch a Lifetime Movie or similar. At least one comes with me when we go out shopping for clothes or shoes as well.

I'm more of a stay at home gamer as I'm constantly in front of a computer wherever I am. Just not very mobile in terms of my professional activity. However, every time I go on vacation, I look forward to playing a few classic games on my GP2X Wiz. It has allowed me to finish emulated classics like Super Metroid, and Mike Tyson's Punch Out. I usually bring it and a more traditional handheld console and end up playing it exclusively. There are newer models out now if you look into it.

My vote is for Nintendo 3DS XL. All the DS games, plus the 3DS games - on one handheld. That's a hell of a nice library.

3DS XL hands down. DS games, 3DS games, virtual console games. The fact that I can have them all on an SD card... Great!

She's no longer modern, but my choice is the good old Game Boy Micro. Actually small enough to take places, screen looks great, buttons fall right under my fingers, and the flashcart options mean I could be entertained for months straight with out carrying carts. For a good chunk of its life, It also enjoyed being about the only major handheld of its generation, so it's got franchises generally associated with other console makers, and just about every genre is not just represented--but *well* represented. Something more modern systems cannot claim.

By far my favorite nintendo system. That's why I own 4.

PS Vita

PSP (hacked)

iPad Mini

All of the above are great imho, but the hacked PSP is probably best just because it can run emulators for all of the classic systems and portables.

My KayPro 2 CP/M Portable w/ Nibbles

Great choice! Fits perfectly on airplane tray tables, doesn't it?

After looking at everyone's responses and thinking about it a while, I decided to go for the 3DS XL as well. I got it refurbed on Nintendo's site for $135 (black/black model). It arrived last night (I paid the little bit extra for quick shipping).

I'm impressed! That's one heck of a system. Nice feel, nice control placement, good looking case. And the 3D actually works well! I've only played MK7 on it, but what a cool experience!

Hahah, yeah...

The corporate controller at my company started out in accounting as an auditor, and was sent all over the world to do internal audits of the company's business units back in the 80s. Back then, he had to lug around one of those suitcase-sized portables to each job site. I can't imagine what a pain in the arse that must have been.

It's cool that you have one though. Must be a great conversation starter.

You know, I did... but I went through a "cleaning" before my daughter was born, and pretty much got rid of like 90% of my stuff. I moved around cause of work, but when I moved back to Florida, I discovered I still had that KayPro portable... it was mint, but I basically sold it for the cost of shipping to some guy who collected Kay Pro stuff, so I'm happy it went to a good home.

I DO still have my first computer though, it's a Kay Pro PC-10. I have DOS 5.0 on it (originally came with 3.21A), and two 20mb RLL hard drives. That computer was awesome. I don't normally keep that kind of stuff, but I kept my first car, my first computer, and my first (and only) wife! Other than that, my house is minimalist modern. I've got multiple walls in my house with NOTHING up against them, and I like it that way!!! :)

I'm no fan of Sony, but right now I've been spending more time with my Vita than anything else. Between TxK and a zillion fighting games and Playstation Plus, it really was a smart purchase. Paying only seventy five bucks for the thing only sweetened the deal. I suspect the Vita is going to be a really popular system for collectors in a couple of years, now that cartridges are vanishing from store shelves.

I'd be playing my 3DS more, if the screen weren't tiny and the L and R buttons actually did things when you pushed them. It's why I'm seriously considering a 3DS XL, but holy handgrenades is it expensive! I don't think I'll be making much progress in Kid Icarus until I buy one. I'll just let my mother play Professor Layton on it until that happens.

Yea... if I could get my hands on a Vita for $75, I would probably go for it...

While I do primarily collect for DS/3DS, my favourite is the Game Boy Advance SP. Lightweight, fits perfectly in my hands, nice backlit screen, and compatible with GB/GBC/GBA.
