New demo: MORPHONIC LAB XIII : CONTARUM : Invitation by Checkpoint

Recommended Posts

Checkpoint released a new Jaguar demo at Evoke this weekend, well worth firing at your Jaguar!

This party version might have issues on 60Hz systems with one effect, if so you might want to check out my capture from real PAL 50Hz hardware below:

MORPHONIC LAB XIII : CONTARUM : Invitation : Evoke 2014 Partyversion

+-------------------------------------------------------------------

System: Atari Jaguar(PAL)

+------------------------

Group: Checkpoint

+-----------------

Please watch on real hardware(PAL) or the video-capture,

the emulator timings are totally wrong.

Sometimes the demo hangs - just power off & power on,

this should fix it.

Also there are some video-glitches in some parts.

Remember - this is a party version done in a very short period of time.

Notes

+----

This demo uses a multi-threading demo-os,

running 2 threads on 68000(multi-vbl technique Equinox),

additionally GPU & DSP, all in parallel.

Some parts use a quadruple screens technique to allow GPU & 68000 rendering in parallel.

The music runs at 21KHz, 16bit stereo, ADPCM encoded stream(full DSP decoder).

The GPU/Blitter texturemapper doesn't run at full speed, still some parts can be optimized more.

The 3D-isosurface isn't also fully optimized yet and it's still buggy, what a pity.

Thanks for posting this sh3-rg, it looks pretty cool! That's great that you included the download link and not just the video, I will be testing it on real 60hz hardware as well, Nice demo they did. :)

Nope, its a ROM.

Any chance of a Jiffi conversion to CD pls? can't seem to get it to convert on PC.

It's a ROM file; you need a Skunkboard/Alpine/flash cart to run this.

EDIT: I should have refreshed the page before posting :P

lsl will fix it up in time, this is just the obligatory party release version. He's got both a PAL and a switchable console to test with, but currently stuck with those painfully slow transfers to skunk until a magic hub appears. 20 minute flash/test cycles don't sound like much fun to me :0)

I test it on a NTSC Jaguar, and there was only a "Bug" in the part Ehen the face was morphing, and the load time was around 2 min.

The bug I saw was the effect that looks like being inside a light-sourced sphere - it only displayed a section of the screen at the top. I think that was an NTSC machine at 60. On a PAL machine all was well.

Is the source code also available ?

lsl doesn't share his demo code afaik. I'd be interested in asking him about the ADPCM DSP decoder though, because I could see the being useful for plenty of people.

Out of all the effects in the demo, the walking man on the wire frame is my favourite.

Same. Wonder if a reasonable facsimile could be done on the A8? Bet it could (not by me - LOL)

That's not it exactly either. I spoke to lsl and defjam during the making of the demo, and they told me that Insane/tSCc actually found the NRV2E sources inside UPX and made a stand alone version using UCL that just packs any data with NRV2E. Since the demo was released, it was ported to the GPU as well. Packing ratios seem to be very good (I think it beats ARJ mode 4) and depacking speed is also good. Of course the GPU version will be even faster than this.
