Crazy Climber #1 Posted August 21, 2014 So, got a little paypal balance burning a hole in my...computer?? I dunno, digital money? Anyways I have a cool new modded Intellivision on the way and was wondering what my first Homebrew purchase should be. Now, I say that lightly as I have purchased quite a few INTV Homebrews in the past. All the left Turn stuff and even the more recent Christmas Carol....but.....I never even opened them and traded/sold them all away with the exception of Carol and I currently don't even know where that one is located. I like the homebrew scene and always wanted to get into Intellivision so I would impulse buy them, support the scene/etc but then realize they were just wasting away on my shelf because I was too damn lazy to drag the old TV out and hook up my Intellivision. I usually end up trading or selling them to someone who would appreciate them more than me (lets face it, some of them were actually a decent investment). Anyways, enough of that.... What to get?? INTV brews seem to be a little more pricey (around $70) so I can only get one right now. Do I play it safe with D2K? Do I take a gamble on something I have never even heard of like Old School? Hmmmm..... I'm looking for that Homebrew that will get me hooked! I have a PILE of Homebrews for several system. Whats going to make ME one of YOU! lol

Fushek #3 Posted August 21, 2014 (edited) You cannot lose with D2K and Carol. Here's my recommendations for homebrews that you should be able to actually find: 1) Carol - Unique to the Intellivision. Funnest game I've played in a while. 2) D2K - Amazing that this game could be made on the Intellivision 3) Lost Caves of Kroz - Unique title to the INTV. Pretty vast in scope. The box art kicks ass ... 4) Match 5 - A sleeper pick if you like puzzle games Stonix and Space Patrol are fun ones but expensive and can only be found occasionally on eBay ... Oh ... and watch for two coming fairly soon ... Ms. Pacman from the same programmer that designed D2K and Princess Quest by nanochess. I've very impressed so far by the Princess Quest screenshots! +save2600 #6 Posted August 21, 2014 D2K Arcade is easily my highest recommended pick. Might be able to get a copy of Donkey Kong Arcade and Old School (carts only?) for the same price though... and if budget is a concern, may as well go for them.

JasonlikesINTV #9 Posted August 22, 2014 (edited) What to get?? INTV brews seem to be a little more pricey (around $70) so I can only get one right now. Sadly, this seems to be the trend lately. I know that a lot goes in to making them. I know it's only a side hobby. I know there's risk and no one should ever lose money on the production side. I really like the quality of the finished product. Still, I miss the days of $50 homebrews. Higher prices are definitely shaping the way I buy these. We shall see. So what to buy? I'm assuming you only want affordable/currently available/soon to be available games. 1. LTO Flash - Not a game, but an absolute must have. 2. Carol vs Ghost - Easily one of my favorite games, especially around the holidays. 3. D2K - Everyone should own this game. 4. Lost Caves of Kroz - This game looks awesome. I'm expecting endless hours of fun! 5. Princess Quest - I'm not sure how it will turn out, but it looks very cool so far. More like a NES game than an Intellivision game. 6. Old School - I haven't made it too far on this game yet, but I like it a lot. Definitely recommended. Consider picking it up while you can. 7. Ms Pacman - This will be the biggest thing since D2K. I hope it comes out this year. 8. Match 5 - I like this game. It's fun and puzzle-y. Puzzly? Puzzlish. 9. Space Patrol - Low on the list because it's $$$ and hard to find, but simply fantastic. Rumored to be available once again....but when 10. Stonix - Also a great game. Also rare (not currently available) and expensive. +intvsteve #10 Posted August 22, 2014 I can't really argue with your list - it's a very good list. I've played Stonix and 4-Tris (also gone the way of the Dodo) the most, and a bit of Carol and Space Patrol. Only a smidge of Old School. I really enjoyed Paddle Party - Handball Smash is a lot of fun and the kids and I really had fun with air hockey and the more traditional pong-like games. The robots of death Easter Egg game is a good bit of fun, too. Calling it 'Pong for Intellivision' isn't really fair - it's a nice collection of mini-games, and only two are really pong. Then again, to each his own. Had a good bit of fun with SuperChef BT, Super Pro Tennis and Spina the Bee, too, but those are hard to find now. As to the prices for new Intellivision games, I think that there are some unavoidable factors that force the cost of Intellivision games higher, though I'm likely at least partially wrong: Strange hardware: AFAIK (and that's not a lot regarding non-Intellivision), it's pretty much off-the-shelf parts for your basic Atari / Colecovision cart. Absolutely NOT SO for Intellivision. There's a substantial barrier that requires some kind of coprocessor to emulate the old Intellivision ROM behavior, attendant firmware, etc. So just the PCB will cost more to produce, and then you still need to program the darn thing just to behave like an Intellivision cart. Developing that firmware and testing it often involves at least several hundred dollars of up-front investment before you've even got a prototype PCB. To top it off, for all that extra cost and effort, you have a smaller market to sell into. From a purely business-by-the-numbers point of view, that's a lot to overcome just to break even, let alone turn a small profit. Overlays! We've gotten a bit 'fat and happy' there, and perhaps overlook that almost a quarter of the original library never had them. They add several dollars to that CIB game, too. Nice, glossy, full-color manuals and cartridge labels. Granted, with printer technology advances, this is much less of an issue since even 5 years ago. But we're not happy w/ home inkjet / laser output, it seems - and producing even 100 copies on a typical consumer-grade printer would likely cost even more! (Just guessing.) When you go with new shells and really upscale boxes, then add in even more costs. Capital investments like cutting dies, moulds for shells, et. al. entail a long-term cost and increase the barrier to entry. We've had plenty of lower-cost games produced in limited quantities, and that may well continue. We can always hope for lower costs, but if it comes, it's likely in the form of a trade-off we'll reluctantly make. I don't think there are any Intellivision cartridge landfills out there to mine for cart shells, and with lower numbers in the wild already, shells can be harder to come by. And we who suffer the variant disease don't help in that regard, either.
JasonlikesINTV #11 Posted August 22, 2014 All excellent points. I'm not saying that any of these retail prices are way beyond actual costs, I'm just hoping that down the road we can eventually see reduced pricing resulting from things like: Eventually paying off initial capital investments (dies, molds, etc) Sharing these costs by working out deals between other sellers to use common parts (I see some of this already with LTO shells, Jay using Elektronite boxes for Aquarius, etc) Increased sales...possibly resulting from a few really good blockbusters and/or good marketing) Again, I'm not complaining or criticising. Just hoping that some good ideas and good fortune, much of which is already in place, eventually eases some of the monetary stress involved in producing games. Who wouldn't like a future of cheaper releases for gamers and increased profits for producers?
HunterZero #12 Posted August 22, 2014 D2K is my first choice. Then Carol. Space Raid and Lost Caverns of Kroz are looking great, but I haven't played them yet. Space Patrol looks fantastic too, but is currently unavailable. Hopefully another run will materialize some day... - J

JasonlikesINTV #25 Posted August 23, 2014 Was there ever a cart release of Super Chef BT? There was a CIB release by Intelligentvision. No longer available. Probably no more than ~150 copies produced. Going rate is ~$150 for CIB.
