Thanks Ray A 1050 just uses a 9V AC power supply. 15 VA/20 watts You see the power port at the back. Best and/or B&C would have one. Yes, modifications include a HAPPY or a USDBLR. Oh, you're Australia. Then I don't know. Rybags can tell you. Edited August 22, 2014 by russg
Rybags
Mine still has the original. I guess you could use a PC supply but of course that's not very practical. Many 3.5" external powered HDDs use a brick that supplies +5 +12 VDC although the Amperage mightn't be sufficient. Another alternative might be an external PS from an Amiga but again somewhat bulky and the square female plugs are hard to find.
Audronic
@Rybags Thanks for that, You won't believe this I have Just repaired a (Spare) Amiga (Brick) Power supply yesterday. That is probably the way to Go. Thanks again Ray
Audronic
@russg Thanks for the info. I have heard of the Happy Mod But Not the USDBLR. I will do some research on the USDBLR. Thanks Ray
Rybags
I'm not sure how the Amiga supply would like the lack of demand... some of the older PSUs need to be kept under a certain load condition - fairly sure the 1050 only uses +12V for the motors which are inactive most of the time. Personally I'd probably try one from a modern external drive - just checked one of mine, it does 2 Amps on both voltages which should be enough. RodLightning
Here's a link with brief description of USDBLR aka ICD US Doubler upgrade for the 1050. http://www.atarimax.com/freenet/freenet_material/5.8-BitComputersSupportArea/9.ProductSummaries/showarticle.php?
Audronic
@Rybags Is this the sort of Power supply That you would use. https://www.dropbox.com/s/c0rkoa0akae56xx/Power%20Supply%2003.jpg Thanks Ray Edited August 22, 2014 by Audronic
Audronic
@RodLightning Thanks for the Link, I will explore this. Thanks Ray
Rybags
I've got a couple of PSUs just like that... whether they'd work on 1050, who knows, but I'd think it should.

It uses a four socket sorta rectangular, clear plastic, about 1 inch wide female plug. I'd be interested in a picture of the Australian 1050 power port. I guess it isn't just a round hole with a center post and outer contacts, about 4mm diameter. Edited August 22, 2014 by russg
Audronic
@Russg and @Rybags Yes Thats what I will have to use. I made up a 10% dummy load for the one in dropbox ""abysmal regulation"" even at 10%. I will have to go with a PC Power Supply The plugs are what i will be using as I have plenty. The socket on the 1050 is in the Link https://www.dropbox.com/s/ba05vky4xji1fab/1050%20Power%20Socket.JPG?dl=0 Thanks Ray

Do you have to go inside? I would guess that's a 9 V AC port.
Rybags
Aus drives, computers have the same power ports like everyone else... it's the PSU that's different, same spec as EU except the wall plug. The drive takes the 9V AC and provides the 5, 12 DC internally.

The drive takes the 9V AC and provides the 5, 12 DC internally. So, EU and AUS are 240 V AC. So you could use a EU supply except you'd need a wall plug adapter, which I'm sure there are. Rybags
Yes... although it's probably rare for people to bother shipping the power bricks abroad, usually cheaper to just source on locally.
Audronic
@Rybags & @russg All sorted I am able to rewire the drive using an Amiga500 power supply (Brick) that has good regulation. It will supply + 12 and +5 Volts. Thanks Ray
