2600 used as "Game Console" icon for new RokuTV

Recommended Posts

Dislaimer: I work for Roku in their new product development group here in Austin. While I'm not personally responsible for this, I really enjoyed our use of the Atari 2600 as inspiration for the icon used for game consoles on the new RokuTV sets. You also can pick "Atari" as one of the input labels.

I don't know what kind of game system that is, but an Atari 2600 it is not!

So you work for Roku, huh? Quit changing shit for the sake of changing shit already! :P

I said "inspired", not an actual copy. The button is sideways, but the joystick is very CX-41 ish, and the horizontal deck style is very unlike any current system.

Hahahaha, took a closer look at the icon as I viewed it on my phone last time. Can make out the 2600 styled joystick now, but the system looks more like an Odyssey2. :)

Either way, nice to see some classic gaming styled icons on such a modern device!

That iconography is actually pretty amateurish. The "cable box" looks more like a tape deck, the "game console" looks like no game console that has ever existed, and the perspective on the "Blu-ray player" is obviously wrong-- the disk looks like it's tilted out of plane with the input slot.

The console itself looks like the top of my washing machine.

Overall interface looks nice, though. I didn't know there was Roku development going on in town.

Looks more like an Odessey 2 minus the keyboard...

And thank you for making a TV with THREE HDMI ports instead of just two! ;D

So, this icon is just in the TCL version of RokuTV; for the Hisense RokuTV models, they're using a gamepad icon loosely based on the original PS DualShock controller instead.

Also, I just checked the list of names you can use to rename your input and we include a generic "Game Console", but also "Xbox", "PlayStation", "Wii", "Atari", and "Pong"!
