+SabertoothRetro
One of my best friends is visiting Japan this week and offered to spend some time looking for a boxed Atari 2800 and Japanese market carts. He says that he visited a pretty neat retro video game shop last year in Tokyo but he didn't know what to look for. This year I sent him with some pics. I know that these did not sell well in Japan. What are the chances of him finding a 2800 or CIB games in the wild? Should I just settle for a Famicom?
AlecRob
The chances of finding 2800 stuff is low. If he does find a boxed system prepare to pay out the ass for it.
nofrills100
I've seen a number advertised online from Japan based retro gaming stores. So it's likely IMO - but price will be an interesting factor.
98PaceCar
About the only place you might see one is Super Potato in Tokyo. I know I've seen them there before, but they are pricy. Finding a Famicom won't be any issue at all. Famicom Disk Systems you'll find in huge stacks as well, but usually without ac adaptors. Zwackery
I was just in Super Potato in mid-May of this year. They had some 2800 CIB games, but no consoles.
Crazy Climber
Japan dealers will pretty much find you anything you are looking for if you have a wagon full of cash
+SabertoothRetro
Thanks for the replies. Super Potato is the store my friend is checking out. I told him to look out for CIB games if he can't find a console.
freewheel
Get a Famicom anyway. You can import them by the 100s, and if you watch Ebay carefully, you can often get them for under $1.50/game including shipping.
Sesquipedal
Finally registered an account on here! I've lurked for many years. I am a decent collector of Famicon games however I can contribute to this if it isn't too late. There is a really good store near Akiba, and I was just there about 3 weeks ago They had an open 2800 there, but who knows what your friend may find. http://www.omohan.com/shops/view/69 レトロゲーム フレンズ Which is a cute name. The lady who runs it is super nice, esp if you speak Japanese. Prices are almost always better than Super Potato. Bad part is that their selection isn't nearly as good. I suspect SP buys stuff from her too.
+SabertoothRetro
Well, Super Potato didn't have any Atari stuff but my buddy came back with a loose Famicom and three games. - Arkanoid, 1942 and Ghostbusters. I can't wait to get it hooked up. It's not an Atari but I'm happy.
marillion
Super Potato??? LOL! What an awesome name for a store. Peace, Chip
y-bot
Pre-Famicom stuff is pretty hard to find in Japan. I spent a lot of time looking in Tokyo and found very little. Mandarake, Super Potato and Friends (or something like that) were the best I found.

Also, I gotta concur most mom n pop video game stores don't go below Famicom.
