ST demo productions - any work w/ 512K?

Recommended Posts

I have an (unfortunately) unexpanded 520ST and I'm wondering if nearly all the demoscene prods out there require 1MB+ or do many run under 512K?

Tnx.

I think the earlier demo's will work like the union demo (sampled sound of the TCB Beat Dis screen will be replaced by YM music though). Have a look at http://www.atarimania.com apart from that there doen't seem to be any other place that has demo's archieved with any info on the minimum amount of ram needed.

The Lost Boys made one called The Definitive Demo that runs on 512k, minus one sampled music portion which needs 1mb to play. As I recall, it only plays regular background music on that screen if you have a 512 machine. It's the first one I ever loaded up on my ST and is still my favorite.

Edit: Here's a link to it --> http://www.atarimania.com/demo-atari-st-definitive-demo-_22220.html

Many oldschool demos should work because it was a challenge for coders back then to pack as much action into 512K compatible software.
You should avoid pack disks though as those versions might save disk space but won't work on a 520STM due to additional RAM needed for depacking.

A great 520STM compatible demo is "Dark Side Of The Spoon" by ULM btw ;)
