PAL to NTSC color conversion

Ahoj,

You could take something like the code here and set the target palette to NTSC and then loop through the PAL RGB values to produce the mapping?

Or make a simple PAL colour picture in Altirria, dump the screen shot, run RastaConverter to target it to an NTSC palette and map the map that way! Overkill or what :)

Main differences from my experience, the problem is usually NTSC stuff looking wrong on PAL - colour 4 is reddish on NTSC and used as such but on PAL is more a pinkish purple. Colour 10 in NTSC is greenish blue but bluish green on PAL. Colours 1 & 15 are almost the same in PAL but different in NTSC.

 

No matter what you do, you don't make everyone happy. People have different settings on TV/monitors, individual computers will vary even if the colour pot is correctly set. Formulas to produce colourspace are hit/miss, saturation and gamma being big arguing points there.

Generally, I have noticed that, except for grey, the colors in PAL are usually one chroma step to the right of the NTSC colors. Which means, chroma 9 in PAL is chroma 10 in NTSC, 10 becomes 11, and 15 becomes 1.

 

I follow the same rule (and do the opposite when going from NTSC to PAL).

Some colors are not the same (you can notice the difference) but as an overall change I think is the better solution..

That's an easy to follow hint. And thanks go to NRV for his pictures as well.

As the colors for PAL and NTSC are different anyway (due to the way they are generated) I guess it's acceptable for the NTSC users.
