Please help a new collector determine what this box variation is....

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am just getting into collecting retro games and consoles.

I am new to the hobby but recently decided to collect from all the main consoles of the 80's. I started this hobby as I have a teenage son who is into games. In my youth I was as well and thought it would be a cool father son thing to do. I recently ran across a storage unit for sale that was previously owned by an old game store that closed down in the mid. 90's that was just full of new and used console games. I thought this would be a great way to get the collection started so I bought it.

I came across a Colecovision Donkey Kong that I have never seen before. Most of the Donkey Kong games I have come across were in sealed cardboard boxes but I have a few CBS versions in plastic clamshell cases and they are shrink wrapped. The clamshell case itself is RED and the label on the clamshell has a gray background under the artwork. I have about 6 of these and one of them is in pretty rough shape while the rest are pretty nice. Does anyone know the story on this box variation? Do I need to open the one that is in rough shape to inspect what is inside? Will that help determine what it is?

I have heard it's Australian, A rental copy etc. but nobody knows for sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi azcolor.

I'm pretty sure that it is the ATARI version of CBS Donkey Kong. (7525-9).

:)

Gray CBS box for ColecoVision - Red CBS box for ATARI and Blue CBS box for IntelliVision.

EDIT:

Australian Version I think.

:)

I only have photos of the rough one as I left all the nicer ones in a storage box. The rest look just like this only not mangled up like this one.

Like I said i'm new so I didn't know how to upload a photo so I am going to use an external URL for attaching. If there is a better way please advise as I am sure I will have more questions as I dig further into the warehouse that I purchased.1donkey.JPG2donkey.JPG

yup as soon as you showed the picture it was easy. There are websites where you can see a lot of boxart if you have others in question. I believe the links are in this forum under a colecovision information thread pinned at the top.

The Australian boxes come in a range of colours which seems to be independent of the game, i.e. green, red, blue and yellow.

I don't see this box as a scan anywhere on the internet. Should take a photo of one of the best ones and send it to the site Crapahute has linked to above?

Sucks being such a noob, but I will get the hand of proper etiquette quickly.

A good scan taken with a flat-bed scanner would be more appreciated than just a photo. I'm also looking for good scans of certain Australian boxes for my ColecoVision trading card project. Although that project is on hold for now (while I'm working on upcoming Team Pixelboy releases) I still like to keep an eye out for scans I don't have yet. In the case of Australian boxes, I'm missing Carnival, Cosmic Avenger, Frenzy, Lady Bug, River Raid (HES), Smurf and Time Pilot.

Just on the backing clamshell colours. There was supposed to be a colour system. Red Colecovision, Yellow Atari, Blue Intellivision. However later releases of Colecovision releases were sometimes in Yellow as the Atari releases were more often in the Red International CBS boxes. So far I've only seen Intellivision releases in the Blue clamshell.

What's really interesting is that the box is for Donkey Kong - the cartridge supplied with the system! I wouldn't have thought there would be much call for it unless it was for display or DK stopped being the supplied cartridge with the system at some time time.

Just for interests sake, I recently picked up an Aussie ColecoVision Space Fury in a blue case. So the theory of no rhyme or reason on the case colours makes sense.

Yeah I think what was a nice idea from marketing soon got overwhelmed buy the practicalities of production and supply as the market dropped out (why make more red clamshells when yellow and blue were sitting unsold?)

the cover slip colour scheme for those interested was Coleco - grey background, red strip background behind the "for use on colecovision only"; Atari yellow background with green strip background behind "for use with Atari Video Computer System"; and Intellivision - light blue back ground, text has a darker blue strip with "For use with Intellivision Master Component"

Thanks for the Space fury pic too.

I forgot where it was but people have said before that donkey kong was not the supplied game in some over seas markets. So they needed to package donkey kong in a box.

Yeah, I think the pack-in game was Mouse Trap in certain regions like Australia. But I'm too lazy to check. :P

Hi Luc.

I can confirm that in Denmark and a few others contries, was it Mouse Trap there was the pack-in game.

And so it was also my first ColecoVision game.

2nd: Cosmic Avenger and 3rd: Donkey Kong.
