SkunkBoard SillyVenture Edition how to BUY.

I've pretty much been living under a rock when it comes to the Skunkboard. I've been getting SD cartridges, such as the Everdrives, for almost all my systems and thought this was one of those types for the Jag. I've had every cartridge for the Jag since about 1997 and then kept up with the Telegames and Songbird releases after, but I wanted a simple one-cart solution for travel. Oops. Looks like I was completely under the wrong impression. I'm not complaining though. I'm sure I'll get use out of this with all the recent ST ports.

Anyway, here's my quick take on a label. (Yes, I know it wasn't actually "Made in the USA", but I put it on there anyway since Atari was a US company). It should be 600dpi if the forum doesn't shrink it down.

Just ordered one, thanks! Now I need to find a US/Canadian Jaguar at a reasonable price to use it with! I've been meaning to get around to getting a Jag ever since release when I was a student and didn't have the cash. I used to lurk on the Jaguar developers' email list in the mid '90s though.

Just wanted to mention that my SillyVenture edition SkunkBoard arrived today. I've been playing around with it for the last couple of hours, and I can already tell this is going to increase my Jag time considerably. Pretty awesome, all the way around...

Ya I got mine yesterday in California after weeks of waiting, almost gave up on the thing. I've always been scared I wont be able to figure out how to use it.. Well, it did take some hours to figure everything out, vimasters video on youtube from 2008 really helped... And ya, wow its fun to play with. :D I've already uploaded some videos.

Do we know the numbers of Skunkboard around the world (from rev.1 to the Silly Venture edition)?

Tursi has posted at least once on the subject, iirc there was a figure that was pretty accurate. skunk + skunk 2 + skunk3 + ghost = just under 500 units. OK, looked it up, top hit on google... "We sold just shy of 500 units, and could have sold more if we could have built them". 10 or more from the guy who made some and posted pics to twitter http://atariage.com/forums/topic/201788-everything-you-wanted-to-know-about-the-skunkboard/?do=findComment&comment=2831306

So it's probably safe to assume 500 is a good number with those added. If you can get a number for the silly ones you have your total.

If you're looking for an install base, how many still function and how many have yet to be even taken out of the box thanks to being added to collections is less easy to calculate.

Thank you for the information, I was not looking for the install base; but about an overall number.

I was curious about how "popular" this kind of stuff can be.

There's apparently no shortage of people to buy them so far - that's a really good thing, the more people that end up owning them, the more chance we have of seeing new stuff appear and the active Jaguar fan base widening.

If we're looking for how many people actively use them for playing games or developing stuff, that's harder to estimate. There are definitely a number in the hands of collectors, potentially owning one of each variety. Collectors gonna collect, if it helps support a release then so be it. I still see occasional mention of people who have had one for years and never got around to trying it, but that's good in a way as it hints that people who maybe collected one have seen there's plenty of stuff out there to give them reason to actually use it. There are some who only really started using it once they realised belboz's gui or jiffi gave them a friendlier method of interaction than a command line.

If you want to get your updated versions of jcp to devs, posting to the AA programming section would be a good start. The Jagware megathread of dev tools is my personal first stop when looking for something, zero keeps that up to date and it usually saves time having to sift through multiple sources manually. http://www.jagware.org/index.php?showtopic=836

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

There is an update of jcp2 (2.0.5), it includes a parameter to select a Jaguar based on the Skunkboard serial number. It was a good suggestion. :-)

The mods from the Jaguar64.eu forum granted me a FTP access, so I will also put stuff there as well.

If someone meets an issue with jcp2 and/or have suggestion(s) to improve the tool, I would like to hear it.

Cool!, The rev. 1 there wasn't that many made of. And I think the Ghost Skunk(white colour) was part of the 3rd run -through Dan & the goatstore. But yeah there hasn't been any big advances in Skunk tech, like usb flashdrive support to hold tons of executables, well that may exist but in rudimentary form and unreleased.(kskunk may have worked on it a bit)

To put it bluntly, you spend $100 for this thing. Spend about an hour trying to figure out how to hook it up and get it working. And then you can play just about every single Jaguar game ever made, for free on your Jag (as opposed to an emulator). But loading some of the bigger games takes 5-15 minutes and they can be kinda unstable and lock up while playing them using the skunkboard.

For $100, its pretty amazing.

The main purpose of it is suppose to be for new people to learn how to make Jaguar games. It seems super daunting to me though, the time it would take to learn and make a half decent Jag game...

i dont know what you are doing i have never had these problems or delay time

if its upload time you are on about, you need a cheapo usb hub from the £ or $ shop that should sort you out (it does not have to be powered)

hooking it up and getting it working isquite simple, you just install the drivers on tursi's website and it just works

This is a Rev. 4 Sillyskunk, lol it has 8MB flashrom -two 4mb banks or 1 6mb bank. All four revs are operationally the same except for rev #1 which only has one 4mb bank and is slightly faster. Be sure to get one when he reups another run of 'em. :)

i think the fast flash ability was taken out either late in the v2 boards or v3 due to some foolish person burning out his skunkboard because he was using a non jaguar spec power supply (9V regulated power supply)

i think the one in use was like 12V after load and it burnt it so fast flash was disabled....

So like if you want to flash AvP Rom how long it takes you to be playing the game? For me 10 minutes.

Trying to figure out skunkboard command prompt was not that easy. But there is graphical user interface which helps a lot.

With the skunkGui it really shouldn't take you more than 5-10 min to get started. It took me about 10 minutes to get started prior to the SkunkGUI and hadn't used the command prompt in like 15 years. I think it's very user friendly.

As for the transfer times, IIRC mine were approx 2 minutes. But I've read the skunk1 might be faster than the later versions, Im not sure to what extent.
