New 2600 Homebrews Now Available in AtariAge Store!

We've just added three new Atari 2600 homebrew games to the AtariAge Store! The new games are:

More details below, as well as in the store:

Omicron

A team of four agents, each a specialist in one of the four elements - water, fire, air and earth - have been miniaturized to microscopic size in order to investigate a mysterious new virus that appears to be of alien origin.

The virus mutates rapidly, mimicking each of the four elements. But something went horribly wrong, and contact with the team was lost. Now the virus threatens to grow out-of-control.

You are the last hope to stop it. Having been miniaturized yourself, you now board the Omicron - a microscopic vessel designed specifically to counter the alien virus and stop it from spreading.

Can you battle your way through each iteration of the virus and destroy the threat?

Piñata

Whatʼs your kind of game? Do you prefer action or arcade? One player or two player? Challenging or extra hard? With Piñata, you have it all!

Piñata is a collection of five challenging games packed into a 32K cartridge. Each game in this collection is unique and will have you coming back for more! Select which game you want to play from the colorful main menu, where you can view your high scores for each game. The five games include in Piñata are Heartbreak, Ping, Joyride, Fixer Fenix, Sr., and Flipside. Heartbreak, Joyride, and Flipside include a two player competitive mode.

Flappy

If you thought flying to nowhere was hard...now they've placed perilous pipes in your path! In Flappy, your challenge is to attend to your avian ally at an altitude avoiding alloy aerial aqueducts. How far will you fare?

Flappy is an Atari 2600 take on the popular (and somewhat infamous at this point) Flappy Bird game that first appeared on the iPhone. The game was unceremoniously removed from the App Store by its author, resulting in a large number of "copycat" games being released to capitalize on the sudden vacuum of the game's disappearance. You can read more about Flappy Bird's history over on Wikipedia. You can also read about Atari 2600 version of Flappy in the AtariAge Forums.

How high can you score? And will you play "just one more time" to see if you can beat your previous best?

But wait, there's more!

While many classic gamers enjoy buying boxed copies of homebrew games when available, others don't care about the boxes and simply want to play homebrew games in cartridge form on their console. To that end, we've added "manual/cart" versions of several homebrews released in 2013 to the store. These copies are $20 less than their boxed equivalent, so if you've been holding off on some of these games because you didn't wan't to pay for a box, now's your chance to pick them up!

Here's a list of the games you can now buy without a box:

Power Off! - $25 Boxed

And finally, we've lowered the price of Power Off! to only $25, which includes a professionally offset printed box, manual and label!

That is all...

...for now!

ordered... not boxed? :(

Unfortunately, it is cost prohibitive to make boxes for every single homebrew game. There are several upcoming games, though, that will have boxes. For a long time, it was pretty rare for 2600 homebrews to get boxes, but now a good percentage of the last few batches of homebrew games have had boxes (IXION, Seaweed Assault, Space Rocks, Frenzy, Blinky Goes Up, Princess Rescue, for instance), and I can count...nine upcoming games for the 2600 and 7800 that will receive boxes.

I'm currently on the fence about getting Omicron but I would like to see a gameplay video first as I've never heard of it before and I don't remember reading about it in the brewery. Anybody got a description, demo ROM, or gameplay video? Also kinda cool in a sick sort of way to play a brand new game about a virus outbreak in lieu of the Ebola plague in Africa. Also Vox support (especially audio) is a welcome addition always... :)

And if only I'd waited a little bit longer to buy Space Rocks and Seaweed Assault. What the hey, glad i was able to support the AA store... :P

Also if i'm not mistaken, Byte Before Christmas will be boxed as will Zippy, both 100% finished last I checked.. I'm guessing you are gearing up for another massive release of boxed games?

We should have AtariVox+ units available soon. The label and manual are being updated to reflect the differences in the AtariVox (which we sold some time ago) versus the AtariVox+.

..Al

Albert, I am so glad you will finally be releasing the AtariVox+ units in the store for all to purchase. This will get more support for the little gadgets and homebrews that support them. Quick question: I purchased an AtariVox in 2013 from The Golden Axe shortly before he fell tragically ill. Is the AtariVox Plus you will be selling soon in the shop, he same model as the one I bought in 2013? Thanx again for the update.

I noticed you removed the Composite/S-Video adapters from the AA store. My NTSC/PAL compliant Hauppauge USB capture works fine with NES/SNES, but displays a bad grayscale image through composite on some of my consoles (demodulated 2600 and SMS) and outright refuses to display anything with my Best AV modded 7800 - unsupported signal. I was thinking about doing "Let's Play" videos on some homebrews using direct capture through real hardware (because quite frankly pointing a camera at the CRT sucks) and figured there was a slight possibility my Hauppauge might respond better using S-Video through a converter. Radio Shack charges too much so I figured I'd throw it in the AA cart next time I placed an order from the store, but the converters are gone. Oh pooey...

Here!

Nice... That's why I've never heard of it. It was developed long before I came to AtariAge. Albert only put it in the store for 2014. 3-year-bump... :P

Anyway I blind ordered it earlier tonight. Always glad to see a new homebrew take advantage of the AtariVox.

Question: do the second joystick option work like in Robotron? If so I need to rig something up... ;)

Nathan Strum has put together a gameplay video for Omicron. I should have it online later today. Omicron is a great game. :)

Not all at once. :)

The first batch of AtariVox+ units will have an onboard header, but that's only important if you want to tinker/hack it. I'm not sure if the units that Ax was selling have this header (I should look, I have a few of those). The version sold in the AtariAge Store will also have a nice label and manual.

Mine has the 5 DIP switches inside to switch it to Vectrex mode; that's all I know. I've never cracked mine open and have no reason to since I don't own a Vectrex. Also the little speakjet inside the Vox is a nice powerful amp to it. I tweaked the volume pot to 100% and was able to power a pair of 2" 4-ohm box speakers (they were full range satellite drivers that belonged to a deceased Cambridge Soundworks surround system) from the headphone plug with literally zero distortion, and loud enough to hear the audio bits over the TV at moderate listening level. :music:

Snagged Blinky (and Oystron, an oldie I should have already picked up). Glad to see that one go to cart only. I think Omicron, Seaweed Assaults and Power Off will go be bought next.

Think "Robotron" for the 2600, and you get a pretty good idea of what the game feels like (and yes - you can use dual joysticks to play it!).

That's excellent news. The idea of holding the fire button down to move made me hesitate just a tad, but I like this idea whole lot!

  • 3 weeks later...

Just got the games. As always, exceeding expectations and completely making my day. Even when we have to wait a little extra for games, AtariAge games are ALWAYS worth the wait, and I would wait twice as long for Piñata than for Destiny!

Thank you again Al, you are a prince!!! :)> Happy holidays sir!!!

Piñata, FLAPPY, and Omicron arrived today.

Really surprised Piñata has AtartVox/SaveKey High Score save. Super bonus!

>(Someone remind me to get a memory location from Richard H. for my future games!)<

cybearg's quick learning, and prolific output took us all by surprise!

Kudos for so many original and fun game ideas, as well as an arcade game!

I had forgotten that Omicron talks. It isn't really mentioned in the description other than "additional games sounds" and it does make sound effects with AtariVox when you lose a life, as well as talk announce the stages.

(S. Serra's next game talks really good, and is fast, fun and frantic like Omicron. Did I mention they are both quite original? I'm nowhere near creating an original game like these that is instantly praise-worthy. You'll be yelling at yourself for just missing the shape as time runs out causing instant desire to play it again and play better one more time!)- Sorry, getting ahead of myself.
