I own two of them and had the same thought in the past...

Then, after thinking about it, and actually simulating two button action, it makes for a poor choice, unfortunately.

 

Even if placed on a table, it's a 'reach-over' of sorts to hit the other button.

Holding it in your hand/palm makes it almost near impossible, at the very least, a considerably uncomfortable task.

 

Possible to mod...Yes. Practical to mod...No.

I had thoughts of modifying a Tac-2 joystick and came to the same conclusion. Technically -- it's possible. Practically -- it'd be useless when completed.

 

One could adapt the wiring for the directional control such that the controller could be used with both buttons on one side instead of at the top. That might be better, but I still think it would be impractical to hold and play.

 

Myself, I went with the Radica Space Invaders mod and never looked back.
