Tempest
Does anyone have a list of all the versions of EOS and Smartwriter that exist and what the differences are? As far as I know there is: EOS EOS 5 (early ADAM units) EOS 6 (most ADAM units) EOS 7 (released on disk with the disk drive) Smartwriter R57 (early ADAM units) R59 R79 R80 R81 (unreleased) R84 ver 1 (unreleased) R84 ver 2 (unreleased) R97 (unofficial version by Rich Drushel)
NIAD
EOS7 was released as part of the Disk Manager program that was supplied with the Adam Disk Drive (well, I need to double check this to make sure it's not EOS6). When you boot the program, this new EOS revision is loaded into memory and then Disk Manager is loaded. You them have to load further programs thru Disk Manager since resetting the Adam wipes out EOS7 from memory. Also, SmartBasic 2.0 comes with EOS7 as well. There was also a far superior OS developed by Walters Software called SmartDSK and it's included on all the programs starting around 1988. It fixes numerous bugs, improves upon many things as well as adds RamDisk drivers. The system (SmartWriter) revisions you are missing from your list that I recall off the top of my head are R59 and R79. Tempest
Is there any reason to update the EOS in the ADAM? I just use mine for games so I can't believe there would be a reason for me.
NIAD
I'd have to do some research to verify, but as far as gaming goes (especially CV carts), there's no benefit.
opcode
How can I check the Smartwriter and EOS versions? My apologies if this is a stupid question...

For SmartWriter, after you turn on the system are in in Electronic Typewriter mode, just press CONTROL and R at the same time and a new SmartKey will display with the revision listed.. CONTROL and R is used to display the revision number of some other Adam software like the Filer programs. All Adam systems were shipped with EOS5, so that is what you got. In SmartBasic, you can PEEK at an address using “ Print Peek(address) “ to display the version, but I don’t recall the specific address offhand. I’ll have to dig out the POKES, PEEKS and CALLS list for SB 1.
NIAD
BTW, the only stupid question is the one not asked.

Just double checked and there isn't an address to PEEK in SmartBASIC that reports the EOS revision number... well, at least the list that I have. The PEEK that I was thinking of is for reporting the version of SmartBASIC, PRINT PEEK(260). Coleco listed the version of EOS that is shipped with all ADAM Computers is EOS5, but a dump and disassembly of EOS5 shows in a comment that the version is EOS6. See the attached pic from a section of Rich Drushel's This Week with My Coleco ADAM... I have attached the PDF. So long story short, if it's EOS5 or EOS6, everyone that has an ADAM has the same EOS revision installed on a PROM/EPROM in the U21 socket on the ADAM Logic Board. The only alternative from Coleco is EOS7 which is supplied with Disk Manager and SmartBasic 2.0. I don't recall all the enhancements, but the main one is dealing with file handling.
