Why We Are Here on AA

Recommended Posts

The Intellivision "community" has a ton of momentum it hasn't had since 1981 or so... New cartridge releases (with quality), folks independently programming, the Flashback, success from Intellivision Lives and Intellivision Rocks, etcetcetc. And the most hardcore of us here on the Atari Age forum.

...Intellivision discussions on an Atari-centric forum platform? Mr. Plimpton must be frowning on us from heaven at this very moment!

Is it time to move to a pure Intellivision domain (eg IntyAge,com) with multiple forums for Intellivision discussions?

Just playing devil's advocate here, I know that changing from AA is not realistic.

We've talked about it before but the reality is there is critical mass here and we're all really lazy. :)

I wouldn't overthink it. Plimpton's dead. Sonic the Hedgehog is in Nintendo games now.

AtariAge is really only superficially Atari-focused anyway, except maybe when it comes to software publishing. "VideogameAge" would be a more appropriate name for the forums.

Also there are a few Intellivision forums on actual dedicated Intellivision sites but they are only maybe 1% as active as these forums. Making the forums is easy. getting people to move over is near impossible.

I don't want to be a downer, but even with the recent surge in popularity I think we're still a small community and a split would do more harm than good. Most people barely have time to waste on one retro game/bacon enthusiast forum, much less two or more. I have no kids, a minimally demanding job, and a decent amount of free time to spend screwing around here, but despite my best efforts to spend more time on other forums (Intellivision Revolution, Intellivision.us, etc) I usually only visit other forums every two weeks to a month at best. I think I'd rather be more active in a larger community than kinda active in multiple smaller ones. Then again, variety IS the spice of life....Just my two cents.

BTW, what ever happened to creating IntellivisionAge with Albert? Wasn't that supposed to link here?

Yeah, we are lazy. Hell I can't even find the stuff on ebay I need in time...

I think we are better off hiding here with the other platforms…still feeling superior over our Atari brethren after all these years.

I agree....I am lany too. Everything in one forum. But we are more active and more friendly then atari people.

Just take a look at my post on the atari 7800 section.....no single reply from atari 7800 people LOL

IntellivisionAge.com already points to AtariAge.com. The top news on the front page is for a contest based on an Intellivision homebrew game. :)

I'd be glad to create additional Intellivision forums down the road if the need warrants.

I agree though my post count is low (although I am "on" this forum most every day) going somewhere else is probably not going to happen. I visit the other sites every few weeks but this is where I come for my Intellivision news.

I don't know, there's quite a number of us who are Atari and Intellivision fans and bouncing back and forth seamlessly here on AA works great. Plus the other forums round out a rich gaming forum experience. Al and friends do a great job on the site, it's stable and there's a nice mix of people. Not sure why you'd want to go elsewhere?

The "Atari Age" is the late 70s and early 80s. I've always thought AA is more of a reflection of that, than Atari-centric.

Yeah, the rarity guides etc are Atari-only - so why doesn't someone talk to Albert & Co. about adding INTV and Coleco in there? Beyond that I just don't see the need to move. EVERYONE involved in pre-crash gaming is here.

That is my intention, but before that can happen, some serious work needs to be done on the database side of things. I'm hoping that can be a community-driven effort, versus just myself doing all that work. :D

Couldn't you just pretend that the INTV is another Atari system, and plug the data in that way?

Or do you mean serious work on the database in terms of the actual data? Because I'm pretty sure most of that is already in place. Hell, I bet 20+ guys here have a database of the 125 ready for export. :P

It would be relatively trivial for me to add Intellivision and ColecoVision to the database if I had the data and images onhand. If you look at one of the existing systems, here's basically what I need:

  • List of all releases, including:
    • Title
    • Manufacturer
    • Model #
    • Year of Release (if known)
    • Number of Players
    • Description
    • Rarity value
    • Type of release (original, homebrew)
    • NTSC / PAL

For each title:

  • Screenshots
  • Cart scan(s)
  • Manual scans (each page individually)
  • Box scans (front and back)
  • Individual developer names/titles (if known)
  • Links to reviews
  • External Links to info specific to that game
  • Related titles (if any)
  • Overlay scans
  • ROM image (if available)

For each system:

  • Catalog scans
  • Trivia
  • Tips & Cheats for games
  • Emulation information
  • History page

Armed with the above information and files, I could add sections for the Intellivision and/or ColecoVision in a few days.

Having said that, the work that I need to do is basically revamping the database schema to add some additional functionality and fix some issues as it is currently setup, and also add a decent CMS so I can easily allow others to edit the information. Ultimately I'd like to have a team of trusted editors who can help maintain the database, and allow anyone to submit new entries as well as corrections/additions to existing entries. Getting all THAT done is a significant amount of work.

I came to Atariage.com looking for Colecovision information, then I naturally jumped into Atari because the forums were in same place, and the Intellivision forum looked like a lot of fun.

I think this would have never happened if each forum was on a different domain ;)

Wow. Took the words right out of my mouth.

You hard-core Intellivision people might be surprised at how many people come to this domain initially looking for Atari stuff and end up reading your Intellivision posts.

Many of the people here find most of all of the retro platforms to be fascinating.
