Anyone else playing NES Remix? (3DS)

Recommended Posts

I can't put this thing down!

I'll admit, I will pretty much purchase any modern game that has a throwback to the 80's/etc and I wasn't expecting a whole hell of a lot with this one but man, I'm having a blast with this game!

post-9102-0-18312100-1418144695.png

Basically it's short scenes from about 20 NES games that you play little challenges in. Go through a level without getting hit, beat gannon in Zelda, etc.. Plus it adds a bunch of remix scenes like play a mirrored level of Donkey Kong backwards or super mario bros in all shadows.

I'm up to 600 stars so far (you get 1 to 3 stars per scene based on preformance/speed) and still having a blast. It's rare I play a game like this more than 15 minutes or so but I'm finding myself getting excited to play it again, very cool~!

Any of you played it? At $30 it's a bit steep for mini games but seriously, addicting and fun! Well worth it for me personally :)

Played a bit on Wii-U and realized I'd rather just play the actual games.

Maybe this is the sort of thing Nintendo should be producing for mobile devices, though.

I got all 3 stars in both games on the Wii-U, but I didn't do that rainbow star stuff. I basically unlocked everything except for the last part of 2 which is just being able to view all the game endings (which I've beaten a thousand times anyway).

I have been tempted but own all the original game so questioning the value.

Also I hate borders. Why didn't they make these games full screen!!

Ha! Yeah, I don't get why they do that either.

I too own all the original games but it's different then just a compilation/etc.. They have challenges with some of the best parts of these games. Kind of like warioware but no so annoying and games I actually like :) You can't actually play the full games on this though :(

It does kind of fire me up to play these games again, but honestly it's tough to play through the entire Zelda or smb without getting bored these days. This games fun since it just highlights all the cool parts. One challenge was to collect each piece of triforce so you basically just do a boss rush to get them all, pretty cool, they even show the ending/etc...

Sounds like the Wii U one is a little different. How many total stars could you get? I'm at around 620's currently but there is still more...

Considering buying it for my 3ds. Sounds like it could be fun.

Well, with how compulsive I am you can just wait a few weeks until I'm completely tired of it and hate it then buy it from me, lol

Just kidding man :)

Each challenge has 3 stars you can earn and there a different amount of challenges for each game. If you do really well you can make those rainbow stars. For the first one the rainbow stars didn't do anything, but for the second one if you get all rainbow stars on every challenge you unlock a secret challenge where you just watch the endings for all the games (Zelda II, Mario 3, Kirby, etc.) which as I said is pretty pointless. Getting 3 stars in every stage for the second game unlocked a special stage where you had to get 100 coins in a SMB 3 level (you got nothing special in the first). Not sure if that level was new or one directly from SMB3. Also, getting 3 stars on every stage for a game gets you a gold frame for that game and getting all rainbow stars gets you a rainbow frame (only in the second one though).

The Wii U port included a Super Luigi Bros. game which was basically SMB but you played Luigi (with the high jump and loose controls from The Lost Levels version) and go from right to left. It was fun at first (going right to left really messes with your brain) but I lost interest before finishing it. The ending is the same as the original

Ah ok, yeah the star system seems to be the same (rainbow/etc..) The 3DS one saves your total star count and when you hit certain levels (500 stars/etc) different things are unlocked. So if you suck at certain games (aka balloon fight and original mario bros for me personally) you can play other games to unlock the remixes and bonus stages. The remixes and bonus stages are where it really shines as it is not exact copies of the games like the other challenges. Things like playing a level of DK with link (link can not jump so it's tricky) or other "made up" scenarios.

The box says you can unlock famicom versions of all the games, this would be sweet but I'm damn near complete and nothing yet?

Yeah the 3DS and Wii-U versions seem to be the same.

The ones that annoyed me were the Mario Bros levels with reversed controls. I had a devil of a time with those (ended up holding my controller upside down). I also suck at CluClu Land and Wario's Woods.

It's the $30 price that is holding me off on this honestly. Maybe if it was $19.99 then it would be a no brainer... Looks fun though!

It's very addicting if short lived.

Hmm...clu clu land and warios woods are NOT on the 3DS version at all?

This is whats on the 3DS version

Each games has 10 to 20 levels

Excitebike

Zelda 1

zelda 2

Super mario bros 1, 2, 3, lost levels

original mario bros

kirby

metroid

kid icarus

dr mario

donkey kong

donkey kong jr

balloon fight

Punch out!!

then there is remix 1, remix 2 and bonus stages all have about 25 levels each

Were all of those on the Wii U?

Okay, according to IGN, looks like the 3DS version actually has LESS levels, lol

http://www.ign.com/boards/threads/ultimate-nes-remix-3ds-vs-nes-remix-1-2-for-wii-u.454319360/

The 3DS one is dubbed "Ultimate" because it takes only the best levels/etc

Looks like, from what is stated, the 3DS versions advantage is online leaderboards/daily online challenges/etc

Thats kind of lame it has less stages, but I don't own a Wii U and really without the portability would probably never play it anyways so I guess it's the best fit for me (3DS)

NES Remix on the Wii U is actually two separate games, albeit available bundled together as of the past week at retail. So you're getting a better deal on the 3DS than anyone that downloaded these in their original form did on the Wii U.

And the 3DS version is definitely inferior to the retail pack of both titles on the Wii U. Stripped out are all the challenges that relate to Baseball, Clu Clu Land, Donkey Kong 3, Golf, Ice Climber, Ice Hockey, NES Open Tournament Golf, Pinball, Tennis, Urban Champion, Wario's Woods, and Wrecking Crew.

It also has some strange bonus with Super Mario Bros. where you can play the entire game at double the speed, which I can't imagine anyone messing with for more than a level or two, once or twice. But you lose Super Luigi Brothers from NES Remix 2, a hack of the original that mirrors it (The screen scrolls left, instead of right), has you playing as Luigi, and applies Luigi's unique physics to the game.

If one owns a Wii U and doesn't care for portability, the Wii U version is likely the way to go.

Looks like, from what is stated, the 3DS versions advantage is online leaderboards/daily online challenges/etc

I didn't know that about the 3DS title, but NES Remix 2 on the Wii U does have leaderboards for the 'Nintendo World Championships Remix' mode. But it sounds as if this is the one spot where the Wii U versions definitely are inferior.

Interesting, so it looks like they dumped most of the black box games for the 3DS. No big deal I guess but still would have been cool to have them.

The speed run SMB has to be for online bragging rights, I found it frustrating but I'm sure people will be whizzing through it and posting there runs/etc online.

Cool game overall, addicting as hell but not sure I would play it on the Wii U. The 3DS is great since I can play it while I'm waiting for my car to warm up or on my lunch break but if I get some insanely rare, actual sit down on the couch console time I'm probably hitting the RPG's :) Still have the Stick of Truth just sitting there...ugh

Definitely on my Christmas list now. Problem is my lists are typically ignored and I get some crappy 18 month wall calendar that started in June of this year.

I loved the remix because of the black box games. The original 20 or so NES games are some of my favorites for the systems. I didn't care for the newer games they shoehorned into the sequel like Wario's Woods, Kirby, and Zelda II. Nobody likes you Wario's Woods! Nobody!

lol, I'm actually amazed at how much I despise Kirby. It came out too late in the NES lifetime (I was already playing my shiny new genesis) but I figured since it was so popular with it's fans I would like it....uh no, guess I had to be there because I pretty much hate it ;)

I'm tempted by the Wii U version, but I find it a shame that they don't also include the full versions of the original games. I'd easily pay the standard $60 for that along with these remixes. I know why Nintendo didn't do it, but it's still unfortunate.

Ha! Yeah, on the 3DS version it has a constant Eshop Icon you can push at anytime in the main menu to go purchase the full games :)

It's smart though, I haven't played the original Metroid since 1988 and was finding myself having a blast with the scenes included...I will likely be downloading it since I will never have time to play it on my actual NES

Same here actually. I don't even remember it coming out for the NES originally (I think the first time I heard the name was for the Gameboy sequel). The game looked interesting and I thought about picking up the Kirby Collection for the Wii to play them all, but never got around to it. Now having played it on NES Remix I'm glad I didn't bother. The concept is neat, but the controls are god awful. It took me forever to beat those challenges because I was constantly doing the wrong action (I was constantly mixing up the suck action and jump).

YES!!! +1000!!

The comment above basically describes my exact feelings. Glad I'm not the only one :)

That would be quite a collection.

If they were smart, they'd do just such a thing late in the life of the Wii U. Most VC downloads that they were going to have sold on the platform will have already been made. But a lot of fans will jump in to check out stuff they otherwise wouldn't be purchasing at $5 a pop, as a collectible, or because they prefer physical releases over downloads.

I've been considering this title for my 3DS line up, however, there are other games on my "to get" list at the moment (Smash, Pokemon, and a few others), so this one is down toward the bottom of the list. As said, perhaps if the price were reduced to $20 I would consider it. Thanks for the information though, Crazy Climber. :)
