Smart OS -- did anyone build it from the schematic in Atari Classics?

Recommended Posts

There were a number of changes made to this as it morphed into other projects, but did anyone (other than the author, Bob1200XL) build it from the layout in Atari Classics, and use the associated "mover" files? What was your experience with it? Thinking of trying it myself, but without any later additions. And this could be with or without the Dallas Smart Socket. This might be a very nice addition for the RAM320 XL/XE, especially if it can be made fairly small and inexpensive. A pcb instead of perfboard would be a really nice addition.

Thanks,

Larry

Well, not the answer that I was hoping for...

Anyway, I thought to test this, would it be feasible to piggyback the Dallas Smart Socket on top of the OS rom, with a couple of pins bent out, using switches to select the rom/SRAM and write functions? Not as clean a perfboard, but for a Q&D test, seems like it would do the same thing. (?) If all goes well then I can explore this further.

@bob1200xl-

I know you don't like switches, but is this feasible?

In general, you cannot switch the ROM and SRAM functions manually since you only have one Chip Select line to the OS socket. You could try writing an SRAM load routine that does not allow OS access. Once the SRAM is loaded with your OS images, you could hold down RESET while you switched to a new OS. Or, power cycle.
