What have you actually PLAYED tracker for 2015 (Season 8)

Recommended Posts

It's actually a few different fonts: one for the Intellivision logo, one for the Mattel Electronics logo, one for the running man, and another for the games. I typed it out in my text editor and then posted a screen cap.

Over on the Intellivision forums we've managed to track down most of the unique Intellivision related fonts and you can download them to your computer.

I thought you guys would get a kick out of that.

Not sure if they can be made a forum fonts. Do websites have to use standard webfonts, or can they embed unique fonts and still have them appear correctly in everybody's browser?

6. Dreamcast (92)

Lots of diversity this week, with 9 different systems appearing in the Top 10: always nice to see! But just as inevitably as an episode of Law & Order goes "clunk-clunk", so does Kaboom go "boom-boom" -- or maybe "splash-splash"? -- with a dominating performance atop all three charts.

Atari 2600

Kaboom!-517 minutes

High score of the week: 76,969

The week started out well; I got my high score on Monday, I think. But then my paddle got jittery and it took me a little while to notice why I was losing.

So then I switched to player 2.

Here are my times for this past week:

Commodore 64:

William Wobbler - 20 min.

I continued to play and map William Wobbler, but I estimated only the time I spent playing, not the time that was spent doing the map. Other than that, I also tried to map Chicago 90 from Youtube videos and screenshots before I realized that a map already exists on the web... ouch.

ATARI 2600

1) Alien - 20 minutes

2) Burgertime - 40 minutes

3) Fantastic Voyage - 165 minutes

Highest Score - 264,610 points (Game 3-BB), for 2600 NEW HSC Season 4 / Week 10

4) Journey Escape - 25 minutes

5) ZAXXON - 10 minutes

Highest score - 47,200 points (Game 1-BB), for 2600 NEW HSC Season 4 / Week 11

ATARI 7800

Rampage - 204 minutes

Rampage will be the next game on 7800 High Score Club Season 7. Today (March 29th), I played this game just for fun / warming-up, and scored more than 1 Million Points - it took me almost 3 hours to reach this value. In this contest, I will document one more score with pictures, video and photo.

Friends, Rampage is too irresistible to play on 7800 system.

My times for the week:

3DO:
Super Street Fighter II Turbo - 4 min.

N64:
Asteroids 64 - 1 min.
Virtual Chess 64 - 31 min.

Dreamcast:
Seaman - 193 min.

Not a lot of time or energy for video games this week, but I/we did keep tending to our petulant virtual pet, Seaman. We've been hopelessly stuck for a couple weeks, trying to figure out why Seaman wouldn't help us move the large rock in his habitat, which is necessary to move to the next stage (as Leonard Nimoy keeps reminding us).

After yet another frustrating session we were about to pack it in, but I had a sudden idea, said "Let me just try one more thing...", and switched the aquarium light from medium to high intensity. Boom, instant response. I guess he simply couldn't see that we needed help?

Otherwise, I just tried out a new game and new 3DO controller, and beat the CPU on the two easiest "real" (non-beginner) difficulties in Virtual Chess 64, playing as Black.

The Super Cassette Vision at #4? That's an unusual week indeed. But we have Kaboom, Rampage, and their respective systems at #1 and #2 across the board to remind us that this is AtariAge.

Meanwhile, the 1000-minute club is now two bigger, as Burgertime on the Atari 2600 and Wolfenstein 3D on the Jaguar become members #148 and #149, with 1023 and 1005 minutes respectively to date.

Atari 2600

Bowling: 2 min

Chopper Command: 1 min

Desert Falcon: 3 min

Great Escape: 5 min

Ikari Warriors: 7 min

Zaxxon: 38 min

PC (DOS)

Silent Hunter: 1129 min

1,000-minute-club in one week. Talk about excessive. And I'm only through to April '43. So two full more years to go before the big firework ends it all. Problem is that 100% realism is too easy when you know a game as good as I know this one. I'm already at 750,000 tons sunk, and this is still the time of frequent torpedo duds. Now, there's only one more realism option I could switch on. And from previous experience, I know that as soon as I switch that on, the game gets practically impossible and not even the best tactics can save you. A bit of a balancing issue right there. Still, I love that game.

Here are my times for this week (March 30th through April 5th). I had this week off from work, so I played a bunch of different games, though not all of them are classic ones...

Arcade:

Centipede - 4 min.

Pac Man - 4 min.

Atari 2600:

New Pacman - 6 min.

Commodore 64:

Crisis Mountain - 154 min. in 4 sessions

Dino Eggs - 38 min.

Online (non-eligible):

Barnyard Jersey Joyride - 5 min.

Cab driver - 14 min.

Google Maps Pac Man - 12 min. in 2 sessions

Screeps - 28 min.

First I tried Screeps which is an online open-world game where you control creeps by scripting their behavior. Sadly, that game crashed the browser (Chrome, which was recommended to work best).

Then I discovered the new Pac-Man feature on Google Maps. If you activate it, it zooms in on the currently selected point and converts the streets to paths, filling them with dots and a few power pills and placing Pac Man and the ghosts which you can then play with. The game has a few things which are unneccessarily different from the arcade version... the "Waka Waka" sound hasn't been converted properly, the ghosts flash too fast and take not enough time to turn to normal after they start flashing.

Then I learned about a Centipede version by Norbert Kehrer who has dynamically recompiled the 6502 code to Javascript so that it's able tun run in a browser... pretty faithfully since it's a translation of the original code, but without sound. I counted this as "arcade" instead of "online" because I consider this emulation.

Then I played a new version of Pac Man on the Atari 2600 which now takes up 8K and is VERY faithfully. Still I managed to see some faults in the sound which I got a bit flamed for when I posted them. For a better comparison, I also played the arcade original for a few minutes.

Then I replayed two online games I had played earlier... Barnyard Jersey Joyride, which I managed to complete after only a few minutes of play, and Cab Driver which I didn't complete. The problem with Cab Driver is that it's pretty random... your goal is to collect a given amount of fares in a given time, but sometimes you just drive around with no one calling "Taxi" so you just get no fares and fall short of your goal by the end of the time.

Then I discovered Crisis Mountain, a game originally written on the Apple II by David Schroeder. I played the C-64 version and after some sessions managed to beat it (it seems like after the 6th screen it doesn't get harder anymore). After that I played his more famous work, Dino Eggs, and completed that as well (by beating Level 9) right on the first game. I also watched Youtube interviews with Mr. Schroeder where he describes how he wrote those games.

My times for the week:

Genesis:
Marsupilami - 170 min.
Sega CD:
Brutal: Paws of Fury - 56 min.
Dreamcast:
Seaman - 223 min.
Surf Rocket Racers - 3 min.
Beat Marsupilami on Hard, with more ease than I expected -- it only took 2.5 hours. The extra 20 minutes of gameplay time was spent replaying certain sections in an emulator to get screenshots.
We also had more meandering conversations with Seaman, who went through additional evolution in the last week. I think we're close to the end of the "game", but I screwed things up by accidentally feeding him a spider, which gave him food poisoning. Sigh.
Finally I tried Brutal: Paws of Fury, a goofy fighter with anthropomorphized animals competing in martial arts battles. I made it to the final boss, but couldn't get past his cheap-shot tactics.

Here's the summary for Week 14, running from March 30 - April 5. We logged 3501 minutes of eligible playtime, playing 30 games on a total of 11 systems.

2. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 695

5. Bruce Lee II (C64) - 180

6. Marsupilami (Genesis) - 170

7. Crisis Mountain (C64) - 154

8. Bruce Lee (Sega Master System) - 120

9. Rampage (Atari 2600) - 83

10. Brutal: Paws of Fury (Sega CD) - 56

Pre-NES top 10:

4. Crisis Mountain (C64) - 154

5. Rampage (Atari 2600) - 83

9. Dino Eggs (C64) - 38

10. Gopher (Atari 2600) - 20

Top 10 systems:

6. Genesis (170)

7. Sega Master System (120)

8. Amiga (89)

9. Sega CD (56)

10. NES/Famicom (45)

Our top 10 this week seems to largely revolve around nautical themes, anthropomorphic animals in a combative mood, and/or kung fu. Ultimately Silent Hunter torpedoes the competition, preventing a repeat of last week's top 2 (except on the pre-NES charts) and winning an instant trip to the 1000-minute club in seat #150.
