Skippy B. Coyote
Time for my weekly report! I played a few less games this week, but spent about the same amount of time I usually do (around 20 hours, give or take) playing. It's too bad there isn't anyone who would pay me to play old games, since I spend enough time doing it that it could probably be a part time job. Atari 2600 Centipede - 18 minutes Crystal Castles - 133 minutes Dig Dug - 58 minutes Gorf - 35 minutes Millipede - 83 minutes Ms. Pac-Man - 48 minutes Sentinel - 18 minutes Game Boy Mortal Kombat II - 31 minutes The Sword of Hope - 10 minutes Game Boy Color Harvest Moon 2 GBC - 656 minutes Ms. Pac-Man: Special Color Edition - 35 minutes Sega Genesis Zero Tolerance - 52 minutes Total Play Time This Week1,177 minutes (19 hours 37 minutes)Individual System Play Times This WeekGame Boy Color: 691 minutes Atari 2600: 393 minutes Sega Genesis: 52 minutes Game Boy: 41 minutes Last week I mentioned that I was a looking for a longer and more story focused game to fill large blocks of time with, and after durdling around a bit with Zero Tolerance and The Sword of Hope I ended up finding just what I was looking for in Harvest Moon 2 GBC. I logged over 11 hours in that game alone this week and I'm still less than 1/3 done with it; so as long as my interest in it holds (which it sure seems like it will) I'll probably be playing it off and on for another 3 or 4 weeks until I finish it and—with any luck—save the village farm from getting turned into an amusement park. I didn't neglect the Atari in the name of farming and virtual hard labor though! I'm still on a major trackball game kick and spent several hours spinning the ball on my Wico Command Control trackball, setting a new personal high score of 112,362 in Crystal Castles and having a heck of a lot of fun playing Millipede too. Sadly Centipede on the Atari 2600 just doesn't work very well with a trackball controller, but pretty much every other trackball arcade game that was ported to the Atari 2600 works brilliantly with the Wico trackball. I was also pretty excited to have set a new high score of 63,050 in Ms. Pac-Man as well! I don't think I'll ever have the insanely awesome skills of Oyamafamily when it comes to Atari 2600 games, but I still get excited whenever I beat one of my old high scores. Or one of my wife's for that matter... though at this point I've pretty much given up ever trying to top her high score in Gorf. She is just crazy good at that game! I rounded off the week with a game of Sentinel on the 2600, which was just as fun as ever. I am kind of glad that the game only takes 20 minutes to beat though, since I think my trigger finger might give out on me if it lasted much longer than that. Still a great game though, and well worth the price of that Best Electronics Atari Light Gun pictured above. Maybe next week I'll give my reproduction copy of Shooting Arcade a go. Anyway, that's all for this week!
+thegoldenband
(With a mouthful of gauze and two fewer teeth than I woke up with this morning...) Here's the summary for Week 27, running from June 29 - July 5. We logged 4384 minutes of eligible playtime, playing 89 games on a total of 20 systems. Top 10: 1. Harvest Moon 2 GBC (Game Boy Color) - 656 2. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 490 3. Mega Bug (CoCo 1 & 2) - 385 4. Historyline 1914-1918 (PC (DOS)) - 200 5. Itchy & Scratchy Game, The (SNES) - 158 6. Frostbite (Atari 2600) - 145 7. Crystal Castles (Atari 2600) - 133 8. Chopper Command (Atari 2600) - 115 9. Stonix (Intellivision) - 105 10. Wordtris (SNES) - 86 Pre-NES top 10: 1. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 490 2. Mega Bug (CoCo 1 & 2) - 385 3. Frostbite (Atari 2600) - 145 4. Crystal Castles (Atari 2600) - 133 5. Chopper Command (Atari 2600) - 115 6. Stonix (Intellivision) - 105 7. Astroblast (Atari 2600) - 83 7. Millipede (Atari 2600) - 83 9. Seaquest (Atari 2600) - 80 10. Demolition Derby (CoCo 1 & 2) - 70 Top 10 systems: 1. Atari 2600 (1529) 2. Game Boy Color (691) 3. CoCo 1 & 2 (520) 4. SNES (444) 5. PC (DOS) (391) 6. Intellivision (190) 7. Genesis (119) 8. C64 (105) 9. Atari 7800 (79) 10. Game Boy (50) Wow, huge numbers across the board this week, with the # of games and platforms especially strong! The Atari 2600 guards its turf on the pre-NES and system charts, but Harvest Moon 2 for Game Boy Color edges it on the Top 10 proper. Also nice to see are a strong performance from the CoCo 1/2 -- whose Megabug takes the #2 spot on the pre-NES chart -- and first-ever appearances on the tracker by the Sinclair ZX80 and ZX81 computers, as well as a rare sighting of the ZX Spectrum, which hadn't been logged since 2013. Finally, the game that was hanging on the edge of the 1000-minute club last week finally crosses over, as Frostbite vaults into spot #157 with 1140 minutes logged. By the way, an odd statistical blip: cvga's playtime of Impossible Mission for Atari 7800 is that game's first-ever appearance on the tracker! Has a pack-in game ever taken that long to show up before, I wonder? Great to see lots of folks taking part. Mid-year stats coming!

carlsson
Wow! Last year we had 60 different systems on an entire season. This year we're already up to 58, so with a bit of creative finding some lesser played ones, we should easily exceed the figure from last year. 2010: 49 systems 2011: 51 systems 2012: 46 systems 2013: 60 systems 2014: 60 systems 2015: 58 systems and counting Edited July 7, 2015 by carlsson

WispFollower
NES Smash TV - 55 minutes I have been working a lot lately, and I have been distracted by some good modern games which came out recently.. However, I'll be playing a good amount of classic games soon. I can't stay away too long. Plus, I've got an RGB modded Intellivision on the way! So, that makes three RGB modded classic systems for me now- with Colecovision and N64 being the others. What a time to be alive! carlsson
PET: Titrator - 4 min. Toker - 17 min. Torpedeo - 2 min. (sic!) Wipeout - 5 min. Not much play time, but at least I finished my first round of PET games A-Z (I know I'm missing/leaving out a few of the old ones, so it isn't entirely conclusive). I also dreamed about playing games, but I can't count that, can I? Edited July 12, 2015 by carlsson

+thegoldenband
My times for the week: Intellivision: Boulder Dash - 12 min. Copter Command - 2 min. Flapee Bird - 12 min. Princess Quest - 21 min. Tower of Doom - 109 min. Started getting back into the Intellivision but was derailed by a malfunctioning controller with a shorting pin #6. Fortunately I have a couple spare broken consoles, so after swapping out the Mylar controller sheet from one of them, I was back in business. After trying out some new homebrews (all of which look quite good), I returned to Tower of Doom for the first time in ages. Playing as the weakest character (the Waif), I beat two more adventures, Fortress/6 Levels and Fortress/12 Levels. I've now completed 6 out of 14 adventures as the Waif, who starts out armed with nothing more than a boot. I almost beat Fortress/6 on my first try, as the game handed me a wealth of powerful items including multiple Grails, but my character got killed right next to the tower exit.
Kurt_Woloch
Here are my times for the past week (July 6th through 12th)... Colecovision: Steam Roller - 495 min. in 8 sessions Commodore 64: Insect Defense - 3 min. Online (non-eligible): Zoo Haul - 45 min. The birthday party is over now, so I got back into gaming. I revisited Steam Roller on the Colecovision and played it until I reached the usual Activision patch score of 35,000 points which isn't too easy to do with this game. I also played an online game called Zoo Haul where you play a zookeeper and have to haul various animals to their cages, to the doctor and for a wash, rendered in 3D graphics. Finally I briefly played Insect Defense, which is a type-in game from Happy Computer, because I've now started to backup all the important data from my old C-64 disks, which would be everything I've written. The version of Insect Defense I played was actually a hack done by me back then, but I still count it as the original version because I can't remember what aspect of the game I've hacked and if the hack worked or not.

Skippy B. Coyote
Before I get to my play time for the week I just wanted to say that you did amazing work with those statistical lists last week thegoldenband! I had a lot of fun reading through them and seeing what the group as a whole has been playing so far this year, and I think it'll be really interesting to continue taking part in this fun little community research project and seeing what the game and system rankings look like by the end of the year. This week I'm reporting in from my tablet, and for some reason the underline function doesn't seem to work on the forum when posting from a mobile device, so forgive me if this week's list doesn't look quite as clean as usual. Hey, thanks very much, and thanks as well for your continued participation! I think we've reached a nice critical mass of participants lately, with lots of activity and different systems represented, which in turn makes the stats more interesting and harder to predict. Should be a fun second half of 2015.

+thegoldenband
I am hooked on Stonix. What a great game! Intellivision: Stonix - 240 minutes It's terrific, isn't it! BTW should I count that time for last week or this (coming) one? I probably won't do the stats until sometime tomorrow. EDIT: Counting it with this past week, but it's easy enough to correct that if I'm wrong.
+thegoldenband
Here's the summary for Week 28, running from July 6 - 12. We logged 5901 minutes of eligible playtime, playing 113 games on a total of 16 systems. Top 10: 1. Historyline 1914-1918 (PC (DOS)) - 1007 2. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 595 3. MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries (PC (Windows 95/98)) - 520 4. SteamRoller (ColecoVision) - 495 5. Stonix (Intellivision) - 240 6. John Madden Football '93 (Genesis) - 130 7. Robot Tank (Atari 2600) - 117 8. River Raid (Atari 2600) - 110 9. Tower of Doom (Intellivision) - 109 10. Wizard and the Princess, The (Apple II) - 103 (If Stonix turns out to be from Week 29, then Chess -- listed below -- would be #11. Or, uh, #10. You get the idea.) Pre-NES top 10: 1. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 595 2. SteamRoller (ColecoVision) - 495 3. Stonix (Intellivision) - 240 4. Robot Tank (Atari 2600) - 117 5. River Raid (Atari 2600) - 110 6. Tower of Doom (Intellivision) - 109 7. Wizard and the Princess, The (Apple II) - 103 8. Chess (CoCo 1 & 2) - 100 9. Venture (Atari 2600) - 84 10. Atlantis (Atari 2600) - 80 Top 10 systems: 1. Atari 2600 (1866) 2. PC (DOS) (1042) 3. ColecoVision (577) 4. PC (Windows 95/98) (520) 5. Intellivision (396) 6. Genesis (381) 7. CoCo 1 & 2 (235) 8. Game Boy (185) 9. Apple II (182) 10. NES/Famicom (145) Even bigger numbers than last week! In fact I'm quite sure our 5901 minutes of gameplay will make the Top 10 busiest weeks of all time, though I'll have to double-check to see exactly where it falls. Most impressively, a huge diversity of games contributed to the total. While there were certainly some heavy hitters, there were also a lot of smaller contributors as well. Not sure when the last time we had over 100 games was, but I'll check on that too. Anyway, speaking of heavy hitters, it's Historyline 1914-1918 on the overall charts, while the Atari-Kaboom duumvirate takes the other top tens. Finally, we have the first-ever appearance of Springer on the tracker -- the number of unplayed classic-era VCS games from NTSC regions is slowly diminishing!
