Sega Dude #1 Posted January 2, 2015 My 600XL has stopped working. When I turn it on, it shows a grey screen on the TV and makes a buzzing noise from the TV. It worked fine when I used it a week or two ago. Extremely upset about this. What happened? Is it fixable? See the pic below:
thegamezmaster #2 Posted January 2, 2015 Check the voltages out of the power supply. I think they can go bad and cause problems.
airsoftmodels #3 Posted January 2, 2015 (edited) I have an atari 600xl with the same issue Sega Dude. I went away over Christmas and when I came back it was like that. I opened it up and tried re-seating the usual suspects. I hope thegamezmaster is right and it is the power supply becuase I have another one on order. Bryan #4 Posted January 2, 2015 Betcha it's a dead ingot. Is your power supply black with no vents and angled sides? If so, you'll probably be replacing some chips. http://atariage.com/forums/topic/220737-problem-with-atari-800xl/?do=findComment&comment=2908506 EDIT: That IS an ingot in your other pictures of the 600XL. When they go the regulator shorts out and puts excessive voltage into the computer.
airsoftmodels #5 Posted January 6, 2015 I replaced my power supply with a "rebuildable" one. The blue screen issue I was experiencing has now become a clear, solid, red screen. I swapped out the CPU, because somebody suggested that in another post regarding an 800xl with a red screen, but no luck. Fortunately, I do have another working 600XL, so I am not too concerned. Also, I have two CX40 joysticks with the gold upgrade on the way to me. I am determined to break my top score of 119,000 on Millipede!

If you have two 600XL's, you can try swapping chips from the broken atari into the good atari one at a time until the good one stops working. Then you know that the chip you just swapped is broke. I'd make sure that you don't get the 'good' and 'bad' atari's chips mixed up, only have one swapped chip in at a time. I'd start with the RAM chips first, red screen is sometimes an indication of RAM problems. In addition, ingots going bad do tend to take out ram chips, DRAMs seem to be more susceptible to overvoltage issues than the other chips are. airsoftmodels #8 Posted January 8, 2015 (edited) At the risk of getting off topic, I played two games of Millipede this morning. The first score was 118,105 and the second was 138,951. Here's a link to the video. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0v5cEppJiDIazlOSER6bVRlNkU/view?usp=sharing and here is where I get 138,951 https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0v5cEppJiDIUXU2Q05VQzZvZjA/view?usp=sharing Edited January 8, 2015 by airsoftmodels
