Lynx LCD Replacement/VGA-Out by McWill

Success! I soldered another female pin header to two of the holes left by brightness dial to act as support for the main header sticking out of the slot. It helps hold everything together without having to use a glue. It does cause the header to angle a little bit but it isn't very noticeable.

I finally got my LYNX II LCD Mod (after more than a month) and installed it. And as everyone says, its AMAZING! Definitely brings the LYNX into the 21th century, transforms the console into a truly great handheld. Thanks to McWill for such a cool mod. Some pics...

@McWill

Another question about LYNX II Mod brightness; I know you mentioned that there is no brightness control anymore. Is it possible for you to program 3 or 4 levels of brightness, controlled by the backlight button? (like a Sony PSP does) Pressing the button would cycle thru the brightness levels and then finally turn off to enable the VGA. Does this sound feasible?

I tried already, but there's not enough space in the CPLD. Sorry. But perhaps in the future I have another idea to solve this.

Just as a matter of interest - what are the limitations preventing you from using a bigger device in a possible future model or project? Is it the size of the device, power requirements or cost?

I'm guessing it is memory space instead of physical space. Not sure if there are versions that might have more programmable memory

Thanks for posting the pics. It is awesome. I was not going to order this; I have spent a small fortune on Atari over the past 30 years. But this was too awesome to pass up. I have mine paid/on order waiting for the next run of mods. Can't wait. Thanks McWill for this great upgrade and service to the community.

It's the memory space of the device. It's already the biggest CPLD. In the future I could add another small device just to handle the brightness. The power requirements are okay.

Has anyone modded a Lynx 1 yet? Might order a screen for one of mine with a dodgy screen :)

Yes, I have modded some LYNX-I :-D

It's also easy to install.

@McWill

Does this mean the LYNX 1 LCD Mod is available now?

MIV

YES - finally it's available now.

Looks a bit harder to solder on Lynx 1 because of the LCD connector. On Lynx 2, the pins are staggered which allows some room to solder on wires or remove the old connector and use the original holes. On Lynx 1, there are no holes so one does need to be careful when soldering on wires. I'd suggest solid core wires only for the Lynx 1 mod like an old IDE-80 conductor ribbon cable. With stranded wires, you may have a stray strand or 2 that could jump across the solder pads or even bridge connection with solder.

I'd offer solder service but I have never done Lynx 1 so if I foul up anything, I'd be out money for replacement Lynx 1 board.
